Kate Allen
One of the 12 independent members of the Board; member since 1 August 2007. Member of the Nominations, Staff Appeals and Student Appeals committees. Director of Amnesty International UK since 2000. A graduate of Brasenose College, Oxford; awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the College in 2006. Before joining Amnesty International she was the Deputy Chief Executive of the Refugee Council. Has also worked in local government (at the GLC, Haringey LBC and the Association of County Councils), and was a Scientific Officer at the SSRC.
Professor Phil Ashworth
One of the four co-opted members, filling the place set aside for a member of the teaching staff (other than a Dean or Head of School); member since August 2004. Member of the Staff Appeals Committee. He is Director of Research and Development for the Life and Physical Sciences and also Professor of Physical Geography in the School of Environment and Technology. Phil is a Research Council (NERC) Panel Chair, Deputy Chair of the British Society of Geomorphology, sits on the Royal Geographical Society Fleming Award Panel and at Brighton holds over £0.5M of NERC and industrial research contracts.
Phil is a trustee of the Springett and Campion Educational Trust.
Betsy Brewer
One of the four co-opted members of the Board, filling the place set aside for a member of the support staff; member since February 2009. Member of the Staff Appeals Committee. Currently works in Information Services, as a Project Manager, having previously worked in Registry and Personnel. Has experience of various governance roles, having been a school governor and city councillor.
Betsy is Director of the Whitehawk Crew Club in Brighton.
Dr Yvonne Burne, OBE
One of the 12 independent members of the Board; member since 1 August 2007. Member of the Student Affairs and Student Appeals committees. Member and Director of the Hastings Academies Trust (on behalf of the University of Brighton). Headmistress of the City of London School for Girls 1995-2007. Graduated from the University of London where she was awarded a first class honours degree in French with German, and subsequently a doctorate. Has wide experience in the education sector, having been a teacher at a number of schools. Also has publishing and commercial experience with companies such as Heinemann and John Murray Ltd. A Trustee of the Mitchell City of London Charity and Educational Foundation and a member of: the Court of City University, the Independent Schools Council and the International Institute of Object Relations Therapy. Awarded the OBE in 2008 for services to education in London.
Yvonne is a trustee of the Gabbitas, Truman and Thring Educational Trust ("Tomorrows Achievers"), the Society of Schoolmasters and Schoolmistress and the 9/11 London Project.
Professor Julian Crampton
Vice-Chancellor of the University since 1 October 2005. Member of the Finance and Employment, Nominations and Remuneration committees of the Board of Governors, Director of the University of Brighton Trading Company Limited. Educated at the University of Sussex (BSc (Hons) Biology 2:1) and the University of Warwick (PhD Biology (Molecular Biology)). Previously Professor of Molecular Biology and Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor at the University of Liverpool, where he held a range of senior appointments including Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Has extensive experience of strategic leadership including research, third-stream initiatives, finance and personnel. Fellow of the: Royal Society of Arts, Institute of Biology, Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Royal Entomological Society (elected Honorary Fellow in 2001); member of the Genetical Society, and the British Society for Parasitology. Founder and Editor of Insect Molecular Biology; Editorial Board member of three other journals. Co-founder and non-Executive Director of Insecta Ltd. Has published widely and supervised 31 PhD students and 20 post-doctoral researchers.
Julian is a trustee of the University of Brighton Foundation, Universities UK, Brighton Dome and Festival Limited and the Royal Pavilion and Museums Foundation.
Judge Margaret Fawcett
One of the 12 independent members of the Board; member since May 2005. Chair of the Student Affairs Committee, member of the Staff Appeals and Student Appeals committees. Judge Fawcett is a District Judge in Brighton working primarily in the field of family law. She read chemistry at the University of London and after graduation was employed in the research department of a large chemical company in East London. After raising a family, she returned to full-time education and followed an external LLB course of the University of London. She obtained articles with a small family firm in Greater London, becoming a partner four years after admission as a solicitor. She was invited to become a Deputy District Judge and took a full-time appointment to the Bench in 1994. Judge Fawcett was required to move to Brighton and has lived in the city ever since. Her educational opportunities have given her a particular interest in the education of girls from a disadvantaged background. She is anxious to promote the further education of mature students.
Mike Geerts
One of the 12 independent members of the Board; member since August 2004. Member of the Finance and Employment and Staff Appeals committees. Formerly Regional Managing Director - Commercial Banking, South East, Royal Bank of Scotland, having joined RBS in 1979. Born in Brighton and educated at local schools and Brighton Technical College. Was a governor of Balfour School for six years and its Chair for three. Joined the Brighton and Hove Economic Partnership in 2002; appointed as a non-Executive Director of Brighton Dome and Festival Ltd in 2005. Non-Executive Chairman Vertex Law; Managing Director of Mike Geerts Corporate Consultancy Ltd; and non-Executive Director of Sussex Partnership Trust.
Professor Brenda Gourley
One of the four co-opted members of the Board; member since 27 April 2011. Member of the Audit and Staff Appeals committees. Vice-Chancellor and CEO of the Open University 2002-2009. Previously occupied the same position at the University of Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal), having been Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. A professional chartered accountant, specialising in financial accounting but also has many years expertise on the changing role of higher education. Served two terms of office both as Chair of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and on the Board of the International Association of Universities. Numerous publications in books, journals and periodicals and a frequent speaker at conferences throughout the world. Fellow of Tisch College, Tufts University, Boston.
John Harley
One of the 12 independent members of the Board; member since August 2008. Member of the Audit, Nominations and Remunerations Committees. Deputy Chairman of the Board since 1 August 2012. Mr Harley lead Ernst & Young's (EY) private equity business for Europe, responsible for the activities of over 100 partners. Mr Harley has extensive experience in audit, business advisory services and corporate finance and has led UK, European and global practices and industry sector teams specifically for the telecoms, technology and media and entertainment industry sectors. He has previously worked in South Africa, the Netherlands and Germany. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and a Member of the Chartered Accountants of South Africa.
John is a Trustee and Chairman of Groundwork (London), Director and Chair of the Audit Committee of Groundwork UK Ltd, and Trustee of the Federation of Groundwork Trusts.
Jacob Kahane
Student representative on the Board since 1 August 2012. President of the University of Brighton's Students' Union. Graduated in 2012 with a BA(Hons) Politics and Criminology degree.
Rosalynde Lowe, CBE
One of the 12 independent members of the Board; member since August 2008. Member of the Finance and Employment, Remuneration and Student Appeals committees. Chief Executive of Hounslow and Spelthorne Community and Mental Health NHS Trust from 1997 until 2003. Since leaving she has worked with the London Department of Health and Social Care on the Leadership London programme, a work-based Master's level degree for senior staff in the NHS. Associate Member of the Faculty of the King's Fund and has been chairman of the Queen's Nursing Institute since 2003; chaired a review of the role of health visitors for the Chief Nurse and the Secretary of State in 2007. Facing the Future was published in June 2007. Has worked as an adviser to the WHO on primary care in Romania, chaired an expert working group on nurse education for the Council of Europe, worked as a consultant to the WHO in central and eastern Europe on health systems development, and to Age Concern England and the Moscow Red Cross on two projects with community nurses in Moscow. A member of the Audit Commission from 1995 until 2001. Awarded a CBE in 2011 for services to healthcare.
Stephen Maycock
One of the 12 independent members of the Board; member since August 2008. Chairman of the Disbursement Advisory Group; member of the Finance and Employment and Staff Appeals and Student Appeals committees. A graduate of Brighton Polytechnic (BA Business Studies). Recently retired as a senior executive in human resources in the private sector, having been employed at Willis Group Holdings since 1996 and served as a member of WGH's Board, its Remuneration Committee, and represented WGH as a Board Director of the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Previously employed by SC Johnson and Son Inc in North America, Europe and Africa, Grand Metropolitan, the Xerox Corporation and the Ford Motor Company. During his career he has been appointed to various associations (Fellow of the CIPD, member of the American Society of Human Resources Managers, member of the International Human Resources Society and member of the IOD). Has held a number of non-executive directorships (including the Ministry of Defence, and the Tri-services Strategic Personnel Board of the MoD).
Cheryl Miller, CBE
One of the 12 independent members of the Board, member since 1 October 2010. Member of the Audit, Nominations committees. Previously Chief Executive of East Sussex County Council (ESCC) and Staff Appeals for 16 years she now runs her own management consultancy. Led ESCC to become a top rated 'Excellent' authority. President of the UK Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (SOLACE) (2004/05). Served as Chairman and Member of a wide range of national, regional and local public and private sector bodies including as Member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (2000-2003), as a member of the Capability Review Team for the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP) (2005), Independent Chairman of the Wokingham Improvement Board (2009/10), and a Non-Executive Director of two companies. Prior to joining ESCC she worked in Whitehall for 16 years, mainly in the Cabinet Office, where her jobs included Head of the Civil Service Selection Board, Head of the Constitutional Branch of the Machinery of Government Division, an Efficiency Scruntineer for the Prime Minister's Efficiency Review Team and Assistant Private Secretary to the Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords. She graduated from the University of Manchester in 1975 with a degree in Geography (specialising in Climatology). Managing Director of Cheryl Miller Associates Ltd; member and Director of the Hastings Academies Trust (on behalf of the University of Brighton); Associate Consultant for the Association of Local Authority Chief Executives (ALACE) trade union; Chair of the Slough Safeguarding Improvement Board; and member of the South East Council of The Prince's Trust.
Lord Mogg
One of the 12 independent members of the Board, appointed October 2005. Chairman of the Board from 1 August 2006. Member of the Finance and Employment Committee and the Board of Trustees of the University of Brighton Foundation. Chairman of the Nomination and Remuneration committees. Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Brighton Trading Company Ltd. Non-Executive Chairman of the Office for Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) since October 2003. Special Adviser to the Office for the Harmonisation of the Internal Market. Graduate of the University of Birmingham. Based in London but lives in Brighton and is a member of the Board of the Brighton and Hove Philharmonic Society. Prior to his appointment to Ofgem, he had been the Director General, Internal Market and Financial Services at the European Commission for the previous 10 years, following a period as the Deputy Director General, Industry, again at the Commission from 1990-1993. Previously held posts in the UK as Deputy Head, European Secretariat, at the Cabinet Office and as Principal Private Secretary to three Secretaries of State together with other senior posts at the Department of Trade and Industry. Spent eight years in the private sector, including Rediffusion Ltd, immediately after his university education.
Karen Norquay
One of the two teaching staff representatives; member since August 2012. Member of the Staff Appeals Committee. She is Head of the new School of Art, Design and Media (a merger of the former Schools of Arts and Media, and Architecture and Design). She is committed to widening participation and leads the university's largest partner college network. She has experience of change management, building regional/international partnerships, recruitment, quality assurance and enhancement. She has also overseen the development and growth of media at the University of Brighton in Hastings (formerly known as the University Centre Hastings). She joined the university in 1990 to lead photography and is a trustee of the Brighton Photo Biennial. She has knowledge of regional networks and was a consultant for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
David Pleavin
One of the four co-opted members of the Board; member since 1 August 2011. Chair of the Council of Brighton Students' Union. A student on the Diploma in Nursing (Adult Nursing). Employed part-time as a Healthcare Assistant for Sussex Community NHS Trust.
Tim Simpson
One of the 12 independent members of the Board; member since November 2007. Chairman of the Finance and Employment Committee since August 2008; member of the Remuneration and Student Appeals Committees. Vice-President of Operations for Qualcomm UK (a developer of mobile phone technology) from 2004 until retirement in 2007. Prior to 2004 he was employed as Strategy and Marketing Director for Marconi Communications (1998-2000) and as Director and Head of Consulting at Trigenix Ltd (2000-2004). Also worked in senior management positions with various companies and spent eight years as a management consultant. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was awarded a BA (Hons) Mathematics (First Class), at the University of Lancaster (MA Operational Research) and at Colorado State University where he gained a PhD in Mathematics/Computing in 1975. Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Recently retired after 10 years as an independent member of the governing body of De Montfort University, during which time he served as Chair of the Audit Committee, Chair of the HR Committee, a member of the Appointment Committee for a new Vice-Chancellor and a member of the Remuneration Committee. Chairman, Centrastage Ltd; and part-time freelance mathematics tutor.

Margaret Wallis
One of the teaching staff representatives since August 2008. Member of the Staff Appeals and Student Affairs committees. Has worked at Brighton since 1990. Currently Centre Director for the Hastings campus of the University of Brighton, having formerly been a Principal Lecturer in the School of Computing, Mathematical and Information Sciences. Has maintained her links with the school (now the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics) where she teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and participates in the work of the Social Informatics Research Group. Director of Cogency Research and Consultancy Ltd; and Director of Church Home Group Resources Ltd.
