Chair of the Academic Board, and line manager for the Deputy and Pro-Vice-Chancellors, the Director of Finance and the Registrar and Secretary.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor

Responsible for planning and resources, including relationships with government funding bodies, the shape of the academic portfolio, staffing and employment relations, information and estates. Chair of the Academic Development Committee, and line manager for the Heads of Estate and Facilities Management, Health and Safety, Information Services, Internal Audit, Personnel and the Strategic Planning Unit. Deputises for the Vice-Chancellor in his absence.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs)

Lead responsibility for teaching, learning and research, including academic standards and quality assurance, and for international policy and for student affairs. Chair of the Academic Standards Committee, and line manager for the deans of faculty and the Head of Sport and Recreation.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Business and Marketing)

Responsibility for the university’s work in support of business and the community, and for the development of its commercial strategy, including the exploitation of its intellectual property and the development of innovation centres. Lead responsibility for promoting the university. Line manager for the Head of Economic and Social Engagement, the Head of Marketing and Communications and the Director of Development and Alumni.

Director of Finance

Responsibility for the university's finances, including financial strategy and planning, investments, budgets, financial control, costing and pricing and value for money. Lead responsibility for Residential and Catering Services. Line manager for the Head of Finance and the Head of Residential and Catering Services.

Carol Burns

Carol Burns


Registrar and Secretary

As Registrar, responsible for the admission, registration and progression of students, and for the framework of academic regulations which govern the university's academic provision. Also responsible for student complaints and appeals, and the student disciplinary process. As Secretary, responsible for the university's constitution, including the operation of the Board of Governors and the Academic Board, and the relationship between them. Line manager for the Head of the Registry and the Head of Student Services.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research)

Previously Dean of the university's Faculty of Arts and Architecture. Responsible for all aspects of the university's submission for the HEFCE 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), and for some aspects of the university's longer term strategy for research related to the RAE. Chair of the RAE Management Group.
