Internal Audit
The Internal Audit Service (IAS) is responsible for carrying out an independent appraisal of all the institution’s activities both financial and otherwise. It provides an independent assurance of the university’s internal control and framework to the Governing Body and designated officer (the Vice-Chancellor).
The IAS carries out its work through an annual plan of audits and reviews which are approved by the Audit Committee. The audit work undertaken is drawn in the main from the areas of high risk as identified in the university’s strategic risk list. Reports which are produced following audits are discussed with managers and viewed by the university’s senior management team and Audit Committee.
The IAS has no executive role although it does provide advice on the development of new systems and day to day advice on the development of new practices in order to maintain its overview of the effectiveness of internal control arrangements.
The Head of Internal Audit provides an annual opinion to the Governing Body and designated officer on the adequacy and effectiveness of the whole internal control system within the university and the extent to which it can be relied upon.
The IAS also reviews the effectiveness of the arrangements in place to achieve proper delivery of value for money in the university.
The IAS also has a responsibly to detect, prevent and investigate matters of irregularity or fraud and to liaise as necessary with external agencies in those investigations. The IAS provides a police liaison role in certain areas of activity between the university and different branches of the police service.
The IAS maintains a dialogue with the university’s external auditors to ensure there is no duplication of work.
