Our code of standards

Standards for private student accommodation

The University of Brighton, University of Sussex and our respective Students' Unions have adopted a joint code of standards for private student accommodation.

We encourage students to choose properties where landlords have signed up to this code.

Our code of standards is based on Unipol code of standards and has been chosen to reflect a balance of common sense obligations and responsibilities between landlords and tenants, setting standards that are achievable without significant expenditure of time and money and without prejudice to their respective legal rights.

The code of standards encompass:

  • equality of opportunity
  • marketing prior to letting
  • repairs and maintenance
  • health and safety
  • energy efficiency
  • security
  • hygiene
  • deposits and a complaints process.
