Dr Angela Sheerin and Dr Anna Guildford
(Senior Research Fellow and Research Fellow, School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences)

Purpose of grant: Develop, optimise, furnish with purpose bought equipment, expand and promote a novel Primary school science outreach program aimed at 6-8 year old pupils throughout Sussex.
This programme aims to scientifically engage primary school children from all backgrounds and give them a “hands on” opportunity to explore science. In small learning groups, the children complete experiments to investigate “what we are” and “what we are made of”.
Acknowledgement of Springboard Grants Programme: By visual display on all of the art material and highlight the programme in any media press coverage. The name and the logo will be displayed and mentioned during the initial school interview and also in the children and teachers introduction in each session.

Mr Samuel Leo Henry Rapp
(Student, Product Design with Professional Practice)

Purpose of grant: Pay for a Product Design exhibition, workshop and seminars that will be run in conjunction with the Brighton Fringe Festival.
The grant will allow us to hold design workshops for students aged 16-18. This will help raise awareness for design and outlying the process involved. The event will be structured as a short lecture followed by a workshop to design and manufacture a flat pack product using our laser cutter. The event will also encourage local business participation to showcase our course, encourage industrial collaboration and promote the importance of design.
Acknowledgement of Springboard Grants Programme: Widely publicised as a part of the Fringe Festival, including listings, fringe flyer and web advertising. We would list the Springboard grant ads the finding source for the event in all publicity. We will also invite reporters from the Argus and the magazine of the institute of engineering designers, to attend and document the workshops and event and again specify the importance of the grant in enabling this to take place.

Mr Guy Terrington
(Student, University of Brighton Drama Society)

Purpose of grant: Secure costume rental and also buy material for sets and props to use on stage, as well as make-up. We would spend some on advertising and publicity to ensure the production was widely known about.
The grant will allow us to publicise the production well, and the wider community coming to see it, we would be able to increase the good standing and reputation the university already has, displaying the potential that it has on offer. Those that see our production may wish to get more involved with the university as a whole, wishing to contribute to similar such endeavours by donating to Springboard in the future. This funding will enable us to develop our equipment stock as well as our props and set that we have available for us to use in future productions, by expanding these we will grow and develop as a society, expanding upon what we have already achieved in the 6 years we have been running.
Acknowledgement of Springboard Grants Programme: We have a website and facebook group which we would promote the Springboard Grants Programme on. Posters and leaflets will be produced to advertise our production which we would place a logo, or other such symbol for people to learn more about it. We would also produce programmes for the production which we would place information in as well. During the production we may project information onto the house curtain before the production, during the interval, and afterwards – part of that would be dedicated to the Springboard Grant Programme.

Miss Nadine Brunswick on behalf of the “Chuck It Team”
(Student,
International Hospitality Management)

Purpose of grant: To take a biodegradable edible cup to market. The cup was produced by the team and exhibited for an assessed module and received great feedback from both peers and lecturers.
The fund will go towards the production of ‘Chuck It’ branded moulds of varying sizes, to enable the team to produce cups on a mass scale, and bulk buy necessary ingredients; as well as patent the product. The cups if successful can be used at festivals and disposed of into the environment due to their ability to biodegrade. The ‘Chuck It’ cup is also edible therefore suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Acknowledgement of Springboard Grants programme: The team will promote the programme around the university and through our outside campaign. The team will also promote the Springboard programme to other entrepreneurial students to encourage them to apply.

Dr Ioannis Pantelidis
(Senior Lecturer in Hospitality and Culinary Arts, Faculty of Education)

Purpose of grant: Purchase a solar cooker that will allow us to run an experiment that will explore perceptions of sustainable food cooking methods versus traditional ones.
The Solar food experience project aims to explore perceptions of alternative methods of cooking that utilise sustainable energy whilst at the same time educating participants about the use of solar cookers in developing countries. This project will enable the hospitality team to engage with the local community in an experiment that will allow participants to be educated about the potential of solar cookers as alternative technology.
Acknowledgement of Springboards Grants programme: Springboard Grants Programme would be in the acknowledgements of the videos, as well as in the acknowledgements of any papers that may be produced from the data collected. A springboard poster will also be used to inform participants that this project has been made possible via springboard grant.

Ms Della Madgwick

Purpose of grantTo provide notice boards and planters with edible plants to further develop a Cockcroft project to build a broad community and raise awareness of sustainable and healthy food choices. This grant will provide notice boards, planters, edible plants, workshop style training for volunteers as well as equipment. Project set out to prove that space within commercial facilities can be used for food growing which in turn can draw together new communities amongst building users.

Miss Rachel Bean

Purpose of grantDevelop and launch an iPhone app to be used as a Hockey teaching resource. The app will include warm ups, drills, skills, games, teaching points and rules. The grant will allow us to purchase relevant software and equipment. App to be used as a teaching resource and can be downloaded by teachers, trainees and students to enhance their knowledge of the sport.
Acknowledgement of Springboard Grants Programme: In the appropriate, promotional materials, local newspaper, word of mouth, recognition through the Pa333 hockey module.

Purpose of grantSupport the development of a ‘Celebratory Olympic Art Exhibition’, showcasing puppet films created by a community of young people aged 14-21 to the wider communities of the University of Brighton. First stage of project – teaching year 9 art, design and technology students the techniques to create puppetry and the skills to create a 3 minute puppet film. Second stage – celebratory exhibition. Awarding certificates and a DVD of the project for each participant.

Mr Daniel Dickson
(student, LLB Law with Business)

Purpose of grantDevelop the advocacy skills of Law students at Brighton University who wish to become a barrister in the future. The funding will purchase table-top, mooting lecterns. These will be used by students competing in the first ever inter-school mooting competition at the University of Brighton. The competition is being help to select two candidates to participate in a moot at the Supreme Court.

Mr Izak van Heerden (Programme Leader for Foundation Degree in Agriculture at Plumpton College)

Purpose of grant: To finance travel and accommodation for a trip to France to visit the SIMA and SIA agricultural shows and subsequently to meet with students from Flixecourt Agricultural College.
The grant will allow students from this young and emerging course to visit France on in order to compare British farming systems to our European counterparts.  There are shows in Paris at which students can familiarise themselves with latest technologies and sustainability. Although a young course in years it has already achieved student success and awards.  In order to establish this course as a leader in Agriculture within the UK, students need to gain widespread experience both home and abroad to sustain the success of the course in the future by spreading the word.
Acknowledgement of Springboard Grants Programme: the students will prepare a DVD which they will promote at the South of England Agricultural Society Show in June.

Jane Devine Mejia
(Collections Development Manager, Screen Archive South East)

Purpose of grantComplete a short film showing how Fashion Design students can successfully make moving image archives part of their research practice.  The film would inspire undergraduates to engage in research. The film would be used by tutors to share best practice with colleagues at the University and in the HE community, by students to show their research and its outcomes, and by Screen Archive South East to demonstrate how moving image archives are relevant to teaching, learning and research in design. The film would be distributed on DVD to Fashion Design tutors and to student participants. We would then make it available via the University’s streaming service.

Miss Carianne Whitworth (Student - Critical Fine Art Practice)

Purpose of grant: To host the production process of a magazine live in the studio space at Grand Parade during the 2011 Degree Show.
Funds would be used to organise a live publishing event in the gallery of Grand Parade during the 2011 Degree Show. The production process will be live and will include contributions from visitors to the exhibition and students alike. The creation of a mailing list will ensure that contributors receive a copy of the magazine post production.Carianne also publishes a magazine called Playground which showcases the work by Brighton students.
Acknowledgement of Springboard Grants programme: through the magazine Playground which is now seen internationally and on line.  Five issues of the magazine have been produced already and are available within a variety of institutions.

Matthew Woollven (Student - Masters in Architecture)

Purpose of grant: To start an independent student-led magazine that will promote the work of Master of Architecture students from the University of Brighton to the wider public and local community (three to four issues a year are envisaged).
The first issue of “Brixton Fanzine” is concerned with this year’s student work in progress within the local community in Brixton.  The first issue has already been designed by MArch students and is almost complete for printing.  The magazine is to be given away free to local community and architectural bookshops.  Funds are needed for the printing and distribution of the magazine around Brixton.
It is believed that this student led magazine would further establish the School’s reputation within the profession and other architecture schools, many of whom have similar publications.

Robert Gissing (Student - P.E. QTS), applying on behalf of the UoB Boxing Team

Purpose of grant: To host a Boxing Show in Eastbourne for students and local community.
Funds would be used to host the University’s own Boxing show put on for students and local community.  This show would provide valuable opportunities for members of the team to compete on behalf of the university and also would to promote the sport within the local community.

Mercer Gilmartin (Student – Teaching), applying on behalf of Brighton and Sussex Waves cheerleading squad

Purpose of grant: To enable purchase of a new flexi roll cheerleading mat for the whole squad to use which has to be shipped in from America.
Unfortunately during the move from the Asa Briggs gym to the new sports gym at Falmer, the cheerleading mats were lost and destroyed.  Although the squad manage a substantial amount of fundraising so they can participate in competitions there is not enough money left for the mat.  At the moment the squad has to travel to Portsmouth every week for training but the acquisition of the mat would end this.  Last year, the squad won nationals and internationals for their category, hence they are considered the best university cheerleading squad at their level in the country.
