Donation ethics – acceptance and disbursement

Philanthropic donations given by alumni, friends, organisations and charitable trusts and foundations play a vital and vibrant role in life and work of the University of Brighton today. Such support enables universities to do more – whether to provide additional scholarships and other student support, to fund the advancement of research and to enhance the overall university experience for our students, staff and our community partners.

The University of Brighton seeks and accepts philanthropic donations in accordance with two formal policies developed by our Disbursement Advisory Group, a committee of our Board of Governors:

University of Brighton Donation Acceptance Policy
University of Brighton Donation Disbursement Policy
(Both of these policies were approved at the March 2011 meeting of the Disbursement Advisory Group.)

These policies reflect the guidelines published by CASE (the Council for Advancement and Support of Education) guidelines, CASE Europe: Ethical Principles Behind the Acceptance of Gifts.

The Disbursement Advisory Group was established by the Board of Governors in May 2010 to oversee the appropriate administration of all philanthropic donations made to the university, to ensure donor wishes are upheld and to provide support and input for the activities of the Development and Alumni Office.
