Alumni and friends support local wine research centre

The construction of the Plumpton Wine Research Centre is well underway and the drive to raise funding was launched in May 2011. Thanks to support from the Rathfinny Wine Company, the Merrydown Trust and many others, sufficient funding was secured by March 2012 to go ahead with the building. Read more...

A cast of sporting heroes

Sculptures of Olympic heroes including Dame Kelly Holmes have been created by a University of Brighton graduate.

Louise Giblin has cast the bodies of five top athletes to celebrate sporting success and to raise money for charity. Her work will be exhibited at Saffron Gallery in Battle, from 27 July to 11 August 2012. Find out more... 27/7/2012

Colophon donates font for graduate show

One of the fonts used in the poster campaign for this year's graduate show was kindly donated by Brighton alumni, Anthony Sheret and Edd Harrington. Both studied Graphic Design BA(Hons) at the Faculty of Arts and now work together at their Brighton studio 'The Entente'. Find out more... 23/7/2012

Santander Universities strikes new three-year agreement with the university

Disability campaigner wins first Alumnus award

Social media guru and disability rights campaigner Julie Howell has been named the first winner of the University of Brighton Alumnus Award.

Winning design

Winners at the 2012 Paralympic games will be wearing medals designed by Brighton alumna, Lin Cheung (3D Materials Practice (Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastic) BA(Hons) 1994). Lin, who is a senior lecturer in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins, was one of 100 designers invited by LOCOG to submit their ideas for consideration for the new medal. Lin took her inspiration from the wings of Nike (the Goddess of Victory) and was inspired by “the endurance, focus and achievement of elite Paralympic athletes". An illustrious talent

A University of Brighton Illustration graduate has won the Observer/Cape/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize 2011.

Isabel Greenberg's work was chosen from more than 200 entries. She said: "I'd entered twice before and once been a runner-up. To win is so nice. I’m so happy about it." 18/1/2012

Co-directed by Brighton alumnus, Phil Ashford (MBA 2003), Enterprise for Change is a not-for-profit organisation which specialises in helping people from disadvantaged backgrounds become self-employed or start a business in order to turn their lives around. 28/6/2011

Sports awards 2011

The alumni association was proud to sponsor the university’s annual Sports Awards in May. Sandra King, Brighton alumna and Boccia Competition Manager at the Paralympics 2012, joined Katherine Merry, Olympic bronze medallist (Women’s 400m – Sydney 2000) as guest speaker. Giving inspiring talks about the importance of pursuing goals and the inestimable value of volunteering, Sandra and Katherine then proceeded to help hand out the awards.

This year’s award went to Gary Marlow (BA(Hons) Physical Education with QTS 2003) in recognition for his services to sport, through his charitable work and his tireless efforts to make sport an inclusive activity regardless of ability.

Panthers Cheerleaders greeted the announcement that they had won the alumni association’s Club of the Year award with a loud chorus of approval. The association was also delighted to congratulate Brighton alumnus, Adam Haniver, who was awarded Coach of the Year for his work with the university’s Boxing Club. 28/6/2011
