Good sports
On Friday 17 May, Sport Brighton hosted its annual sports awards dinner for current students at the Winter Gardens in Eastbourne.
We were delighted to welcome Ben Hawes (Sports Technology 2003) back to the university as our VIP alumnus speaker. Ben, who recently retired from Team GB’s hockey team, has represented Great Britain at three Olympic Games (Athens 2004, captain at Beijing 2008 and London 2012). Ben is also a member of the British Olympic Association (BOA) Athletes Commission. Ben regaled the audience with anecdotes of his Olympic career, including a few interesting insights into life as an elite athlete.
Our warmest congratulations went to the Cheerleading club (Eastbourne campus) which won the alumni-sponsored Club of the Year Award. Over the last year, the cheerleaders’ success has included winning a national competition, being invited to compete in the USA next year and doing some outstanding community engagement work with local schools.

Highlights of the evening included alumnus Adam Haniver (Sports Science 2000) winning Coach of the Year (Boxing) for the second time. Adam’s work with the Boxing club has elevated it to become the top BUCS university club for 2013. Alumna Sadie Mason (Sports Science 1985) was also on hand to award a prize in her capacity as Sussex Sports Partnership Director.

How does sport impact on employability?
The Sport Industry Research Centre is undertaking a survey with as many graduates as they can, to look at the impact of sport on employability. This national project has been commissioned by British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and it would be great to include your views. Please participate here by 9 June.
