Professor Sir Graeme Catto
Doctor of Medicine
Sir Graeme stepped down as Chair of the General Medical Council last year, having previously been President of the organisation.
After graduating in medicine at the University of Aberdeen, he gained a Harkness Fellowship to study further at Harvard University. In his medical career he has worked extensively in the field of renal medicine and has published widely on different aspects of nephrology and immunology.
He chairs both the Scottish Stem Cell Network and the Better Regulations Group for Universities UK, and he is president of the Association for the Study of Medical Education. In 2002 he was knighted for services to medicine and medicine education.
Sir Graeme has also worked in several higher education institutions. He worked for the University of Aberdeen for 30 years until 2000, rising to the position of vice principal of the institution. Between 2000 and 2005 he held the positions of vice principal at King’s College London, dean of Guy’s, King’s College and St Thomas’ Hospitals Medical and Dental School and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of London. In 2005 he returned to the University of Aberdeen to spearhead fundraising for the Matthew Hay Centre.
More recently, Sir Graeme was the independent chair of the assessment panel for the West Sussex Primary Care Trust’s Fit for the Future consultation process.
