Dr Dennis P Hall
16 February 1928 to 1 July 2011
Dr Dennis Hall, a former student and member of the lecturing staff, died on 1 July 2011, aged 83.
Dennis had taken the two-year mature students’ course of teacher training at Brighton College of Education (which later merged with Brighton Polytechnic). After teaching at Downs Junior, King’s Manor and Davison schools, he became a senior lecturer on BEd and BA courses in the English department at the Falmer site of Brighton Polytechnic/University of Brighton.
Before training as a teacher, Dennis was the co-owner of a successful advertising business – and the sale of this had enabled him to pursue his desire for a career in academia. At Falmer, Dennis also edited an in-house journal for polytechnic staff and often arranged visits to Worthing and Chichester for his English students. He gained his doctorate from London University and his research on the novelist, Joyce Cary, was published as a book by Macmillan.
Dennis was an excellent colleague, being liked and respected by all who knew him.
