Students and Staff at the University of Brighton have been working hard to recognise Excellence in teaching, support, representation and peer leadership. We’ve had over a thousand separate nominations, with five hundred and thirty individual nominees standing to win one of our Excellence Awards. This year they are including 2 new awards for PASS Leader and PASS Supervisor.
All PASS Leaders and Supervisors are invited to attend the award ceremony on Wednesday 22nd May, Huxley Lecture Theatre, Building, Moulsecoomb
There will be a drinks reception at 6pm with free champagne and a chance for all PASS Leaders to come and collect their certificate.
What is the PASS Leader Award?
PASS Leader Award – The PASS Leader that has made a real difference to your teaching, learning & academic experience.
The PASS leaders are:
- 2nd and 3rd year students
- Volunteers
- Trained & equipped
- Supervised & observed
The role of a PASS leader:
- Training: Attend initial two-day training and advanced sessions (a couple per semester)
- Level of commitment: Plan and run a weekly or fortnightly PASS session (1 hour); attend debrief sessions - usually after the PASS session (approx. 30 mins) weekly or fortnightly
- Role in sessions: Leaders work in pairs to facilitate a study session revisiting course material and developing students’ study skills through fun activities and discussion; be supportive of students’ problems and signpost students to relevant help; share their experience of 1st year; take attendance for evaluation work; give students confidence to ask questions at PASS sessions and become more engaged and independent with their studying
- Role out of sessions: have regular contact via email and facebook with their PASS group to remind students of sessions; share notes from previous sessions; find out what topics students would like to cover; keep in contact with their co-leader to plan and evaluate sessions
- What they DON’T do: give answers to academic questions or coursework; take the place of a lecturer
How to become a PASS leader?
In the situation of a pilot, students are often invited to consider taking on the role. Typically students are told about PASS and invited to apply online and then selected by staff.
Personal qualities required: Trustworthy, non judgmental, a team player, enthusiastic, friendly, approachable, a role model (not perfect but survived first year!)
What support is available for leaders?
PASS leaders have regular contact with staff including debriefing sessions; additional training and support if required; recognition and reward.
What is the PASS Supervisor Award?
PASS Supervisor Award – The Supervisors that has made a real difference to your teaching, learning & academic experience.
Who are the PASS Supervisors?
They are either mainly Student Support and Guidance Tutors (SSGTs) or academic staff who are championing and overseeing the PASS scheme in their school or on their course/module.
How do they become a PASS Supervisor?
Usually by volunteering and seeking to establish the PASS scheme in collaboration with the CLT. Sometime they are approached by the CLT or Head of School and
What is the role of a PASS Supervisor?
- Recruit and co-train PASS Leaders
- Plan and lead weekly or fortnightly leaders’ debriefs
- Provide support and encouragement to the PASS leaders, helping them to solve problems
- Conduct supportive observations of PASS sessions and give feedback to leaders
- Promote PASS to 1st years students and academic colleagues in the department
- Liaise with academic colleagues to inform content of sessions or provide feedback from sessions
- Work with administrative staff on timetabling and room booking
- Work with administrative staff to create and update studentcentral with PASS information
- Reminding leaders to update PASS registers for evaluation and working with administrative staff to collate
- Working with CLT to evaluate the PASS scheme
- Attending PASS Practitioner’s Network meetings once a term
