David joined Brighton Business School in September 2008. He has a DPhil in Sociology from the University of Sussex, and previously worked as a Researcher at the Institute for Employment Studies.

David's recent research has focused on employment at the beginning and end of the working life-course. He has a particular interest in work beyond 'typical' retirement age, stemming from his doctoral research on employment past age 65 in the UK and USA. He has published articles on this topic in Work, Employment and Society and Journal of Social Policy. David currently has a three year Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship to further explore the changing nature of work and retirement in the UK and US.

He was the Principal Investigator for the Economic and Social Research Council 'Rethinking Retirement' seminar series, working with Professors Sarah Vickerstaff and Wendy Loretto (www.rethinkingretirement.org). He is co-editor of two forthcoming journal special issues collecting papers from the series, in Employee Relations and Social Policy and Society.

David's commentary on older workers and retirement issues has been published by The Guardian newspaper, Personnel Today, Mature Times, HRZone, and the Institute of Leadership and Management. He also recently contributed to a debate on increases in State Pension Age on the Voice of Russia Radio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vYdg8nSqLE.

At the other end of the age spectrum, David co-ordinated a Santander-funded research project on young people, employment and internships in Spain and the UK. This project included colleagues from Brighton Business School, the Institute for Employment Studies, and IKEI Research and Consultancy in Spain. He also worked with Professor Jacqueline O'Reilly on the EU Workcare Synergies project (http://workcaresynergies.eu/), which brought together research on labour market transitions across the life-course.

David supervises two PhD students: Christine Lewis on the abolition of the Educational Maintenance Allowance, and Karen Hanley on the employment choices of people over 65 in Denmark and the UK. David welcomes enquiries from potential PhD students interested in conducting research on issues related to age and employment.

David teaches Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management. He is a dissertation supervisor for the MSc in Personnel and Development.

David is a member of CROME.
