Maura has a BSc in Economics from New York University and a PhD in Economics from the University of Notre Dame, USA. Before coming to the University of Brighton, she was an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Management, University of Dallas. From 1993-2000, Maura taught at the Queen's University of Belfast. She taught at St Catharine's College Cambridge, Birkbeck College, University of London and was a visiting research fellow at the ESRC Centre for Business Research, University of Cambridge. She was external examiner at the University of Birmingham Business School from 2004-2007.

She is currently an EU Marie Curie Scholar (2009-2012). She is investigating the determinants and performance of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the emerging economies of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. The project also compares how labour is managed and by whom in foreign and domestic subsidiaries of the same organisations. The relationships between strategic HRM, devolvement of HR to line managers and subsidiary performance is examined. The importance of country and organisational culture in understanding differences in SHRM and the delivery of HR is central to this investigation. This project represents a synthesis of Maura’s expertise in industrial and labour economics and human resource management.

In a non-academic capacity, Maura worked as a consultant for numerous US companies, focussing mostly in the areas of implementing successful human resource management practices, talent management, etc. She also assisted in attracting funding for several start-up companies in the US and Northern Ireland. She served as a small business development consultant and economic regeneration consultant for the EU in Ireland and Lebanon and the UN in Palestine. Maura is a member of the British and American Academies of Management.

Maura is a member of CROME.
