Accounting, Economics and Finance

Brighton Business School have good links with the major accounting bodies and each of our degree awards gains accreditation from professional bodies.

Our link with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) include Gold College Status for the ACCA course. We have one of five of the UK's internally-assessed courses. And a range of external companies provide placements or prizes for students - for example KPMG, Grant Thornton and Deloittes.

Courses

We offer a range of courses that cover all aspects of accounting and finance at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The undergraduate honours degrees are studied full-time over three years or, four years if you choose to take a work placement. At postgraduate level we offer a Masters degree in Finance and Investment.

The Business School offers a variety of professional courses in accounting and finance, from which you can gain accreditation from the ACCA.
Students gain specialist skills and develop business, interpersonal, communication and analytical abilities.

The specialist skills you can gain from our courses include:

  • Knowledge of commerce and the financial markets.
  • An understanding of the complex financial decisions in the context of an ever-changing environment.
  • Key skills in gathering, analysing and presenting information.
  • An understanding of the impact of globalisation and advance in technology on the financial markets.
  • Key skills in numeracy, problem solving, self-organisation, time management, working with others, IT and communication.
  • Crucial skills in the interpretation of information and detailed reports.

Members of staff are drawn from industry, so have a wealth of experience they bring to their teaching. They are experts in the areas of accounting, economics and finance including a Professor of Accounting and a Reader in Economics. This staff group is widely published with textbooks and numerous journal articles to their credit.

Professional and industry links

We actively provide consultancy for local and national companies and public bodies, including work with American Express, Nuffield Group, NHS, Social Services, Red Cross, Brighton Hove Chamber of Commerce, the Argus Newspaper Group ands Sussex Enterprise.

The ACCA course has been developed in consultation with the professional body to ensure that it covers the knowledge and skills necessary to qualify for work in any modern accountancy or financial firm - whether that's in practice, industry, commerce or the public sector.

Placements

The placement year is taken between the second and final study years. It allows you to apply your accumulated skills in paid employment and gain valuable hands-on experience. It also helps you to build industry contacts that will be invaluable when you graduate.

We support our students in finding suitable placements. We have a placements office which acts as a link between employers and students, providing information about placements and arranging interviews opportunities.

Research

We hosted the History of Economic Thought Conference and the EACES conference in 2006 bringing over 300 international academics to Brighton. Areas of research expertise include small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) accounting and finance and transitional economics. There are a number of publications available and an active doctoral research programme in these areas. The school is also developing its expertise and reputation in the areas of social enterprise accounting and social auditing.

Facilities

The school is one of just a handful of UK universities that has a fully equipped dealing room with Reuters online information and specialist software and learning packages - including EViews, RiskManager and Magellan. The specialist courses on the Finance and Investment and Economics and Finance degrees use this facility fully while the other degrees use it to enhance their own learning environment.

Graduate outcomes

Graduates from the accounting and finance area go on to jobs in the accounting profession and the City. Over 90% of graduates are in employment within 6 months with the remainder either taking higher degrees or taking time out before entering full-time employment.
