Beyond Bling: The role of conspicuous consumption in today's society
6th November 2012
The growing economic and social importance of conspicuous consumption has become a striking feature of the new consumerist societies. The supply of products and services marketed as symbols of social identity and style now represents a significant part of overall economic and commercial activity. The seminar will bring together practitioners, and researchers from sociology, business management, and psychology to discuss and debate the effect of conspicuous consumption on present day society. The seminar aims to showcase the research from Brighton and will also act as a platform for future collaborations between practitioners and researchers.

Imagining Work
7th November 2012
Imaging work aims to ask the question of employees "how do you see yourself at work?". The event increases awareness of research and introduce new visual and sensory research approaches designed to understand employee perceptions of work. This is essentially good management and a win:win for employees and organisations.
The event will comprise key speakers, discussion and an interactive activity to introduce and promote innovative and interactive ESRC and social science ways of understanding employees' perspectives of their work. In addition to promoting the accessibility and value of social science research, research approaches introduced could potentially be immediately utilised post-event.
This event is exciting as it draws on ESRC research from more conventional sources of knowledge (quantitative and qualitative) to the more pioneering visual and sensory social science approaches. Such new approaches could be added to the existing organisational "tool-kit" of ways to understand employees' perceptions and perspectives.

- Dr Dawn Lyon from the University of Kent: exploring visual and sensory representations of work
- Dr Penny Simpson from the University of Brighton: Chair: importance of understanding employees' feelings about work
