The Human Resource Management (HRM) research group aims to promote both the research and practice of HRM. The group has a particular interest in the relationship between HRM practices and policies and individual/organisational performance. It also seeks to promote discourse and debate about research methodologies and seeks to find innovative ways to improve the quality of methods used by HRM researchers.
The group aims to provide an international forum for discussion and debate, and to stress the critical importance of people management to a wide range of economic, political and social concerns.
Funded Research
Group member, Maura Sheehan is EU Marie Curie Scholar (2009-2012). The EU funding is enabling her to conduct a large empirical study on the determinants and performance of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the emerging economies of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. The project also compares how labour is managed and by whom in foreign and domestic subsidiaries of the same organisations. The relationships between strategic HRM, devolvement of HR to line managers and subsidiary performance is examined. The importance of country and organisational culture in understanding differences in SHRM and the delivery of HR is central to this investigation.
Doctoral Research
Group member, Penny Simpson is a Senior Lecturer in HRM and Organisational Behaviour. Penny is currently undertaking her Doctorate exploring the nature and antecedents of customer oriented behaviour within a case study service context. While there is an increasing focus in literature about the importance of service employees behaving in a customer oriented way there is debate about both the nature of that behaviour and also the factors that engender such behaviour. This thesis research explores both these aspects within a railway service context.
