We offer an MPhil with the possibility for research students to transfer to a PhD. Our research programme requires you to submit a written thesis and be questioned on your research by an examination panel (the viva).
Length of study
You can register to complete your research degree either part-time or full-time. The time a research degree takes will vary, but a full-time PhD takes on average four years. The minimum and maximum length of study are:
| Minimum | Maximum | |
|---|---|---|
| MPhil | ||
| Full-time | 18 months | 36 months |
| Part-time | 30 months | 48 months |
| PhD | ||
| Full-time | 24 months | 60 months |
| Part-time | 36 months | 72 months |
Time commitment
- Full-time: at least 35 hours per week
- Part-time: at least 12 hours per week
Supervision
Each research student is usually supported by two supervisors. One will be your Director of Studies, and will be responsible for your progress.
Regular contact with supervisors
The student/supervisor relationship is pivotal to the research process and we strongly advise students to keep in regular contact with their supervisors. However, it is up to you and your supervisor to negotiate and agree a satisfactory level of support.
Research methodology training
As a part of your research degree, we offer a Certificate in Research Methods which we encourage all research degree students to undertake. This course starts in October or January and is included in the research degree fees.

Conferences
All our research students are encouraged to present papers about their research at relevant in-house seminars and conferences both in the UK and overseas.
Publications
We encourage our students to publish appropriate parts of their research in key refereed journals or as part of edited texts. Until you graduate, publications will normally be joint authorship with one of your supervisors.
Postgraduate study is both intellectually demanding and personally rewarding. If you would like to take up the challenge by joining our growing number of research students, please contact us to discuss your research interests.
