Professional and industry links

The law team at Brighton has excellent links with the local legal community and are supported by a formal advisory and liaison panel which includes a local district judge, the head of Brighton's only barristers chambers, representatives from Sussex Law Society, the Sussex branch of the Institute of Legal Executives, and the local branch of the Crown Prosecution Service, the Chair of Sussex Young Lawyers, and representatives from leading local solicitors firms.

Support from the local practitioner community includes: sponsorship of student prizes; the fielding of speakers at careers events; provision of advocacy training and speakers on topical legal issues; provision of shadowing and judicial internship opportunities; and sponsorship of an annual moot between University of Brighton and Sussex University law students.

Burt Brill & Cardens were founded in 1897 in Brighton and also have offices in East Grinstead and Worthing. The firm has had close links with the University for a number of years and are the sponsors of the Faculty of Arts & Architecture Graduate Show which is held each June in the grounds of Grand Parade. Their management team includes a prize-winning graduate from the Business School and as well as delivering talks to our business school students they also award a prize for the best Undergraduate Equity & Trust student.

The firm has been a significant and generous supporter of law at the University for many years . Howlett Clarke partner, Richard Schaverien, a CEDR-accredited mediator, regularly delivers talks on mediation to our law students. Howlett Clarke also awards a prize to the best final year LLB student, offers work shadowing opportunities to law students, regularly contributes to careers events at the University, and sponsors the annual University of Brighton v Sussex University mooting competition (the "Howlett Clarke Challenge Shield").
