Sporting chance

Published 18 May 2010

University of Brighton second year fashion students were given the chance to put ideas into practice when they were asked to design a collection for the proposed development of a casual sportswear range for MKK, a regional design company based in Eastbourne.

Five finalists were chosen and the overall winner was Jordan Paul who collected a cash prize and will be given the opportunity to have a garment sampled in China where MKK's range is made.

Roger Myall, MKK's managing director, said: "Jordan produced some exceptional concepts which has ensured the project gets off to a great start."

He first approached Malcolm Mcinnes, principal lecturer in the School of Architecture and Design, and his team "because we felt it would be an excellent opportunity for a local company to get involved with a local design school with a view to assisting us in launching a new range of fashion-based leisurewear.

"We believe that there is a gap in the market for great looking off-field team wear and the link up with the school is to ensure we create such a range.”

Malcolm said: "It is always a great opportunity when students engage with industry through live competition projects.

"The occasion to pitch new and innovative ideas to design teams with the hope of effecting new direction and aspirations of design companies is exciting and challenging.

"The second year of the programme in fashion focuses on designing for different markets and market awareness. This project incorporated the use of digital technologies in building student skills to design and incorporate into a professional presentation.

"All second year fashion students produced work to a high standard that the Department of Fashion and Textiles is recognised for, and impressed the MKK team."
