Apprentices welcome

The University of Brighton has signed a commitment to increase access to higher education for high-achieving advanced apprentices on work-based courses, including engineers, childcare workers, administrators, health and social workers.
The Apprenticeships Admissions Pledge is being promoted by the university-based Sussex Learning Network (SLN), and the University of Brighton is now one of nine higher education providers across Sussex to sign up.
It means the university welcomes direct-entry to undergraduate degrees, foundation degrees, higher national certificates (HNC) and diplomas, with the inclusion of advanced apprenticeships as suitable entry qualifications in all course prospectuses, a move which will bring closer ties between the university and employers.
Professor Stuart Laing, the university's Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: "We are conscious of the national drive to recruit apprentices and increase the number of employees with higher-level skills in the economy.
"We think it is very important in these times of change to encourage employers and their apprentices to consider building on their knowledge and skills through an appropriate higher education course."
Mark Price, principal lecturer in the university’s School of Education, said: "The value of advanced apprentices is that they combine work-based learning, practical experience and a development of key professional knowledge and skills – the foundation degrees build on this and extend the knowledge and skill-base, whilst providing a route to professional recognition."
