New board to boost graduate employment

Published 29 January 2013

The University of Brighton is launching a new Industrial Advisory Board to help shape the agenda for computing and mathematics education and research and to enhance graduate employment.

The board will comprise a panel of local, national and international industrialists and experts who reflect the breadth of teaching and research undertaken at the university.

To be launched on 31 January, the board will have a teaching, research and enterprise agenda which reflects the increasing interdependence of all three aspects of the university’s work and supports the strategic plan for research-informed teaching and increased relevance and employability of graduates.

Expected to attend the launch and to join the board will be Andrew Eades, CEO and founder of Relentless, the Brighton based games software company; Tom Khabaza from the Society of Data Miners; Kevin Long from data technologies and services provider Teradata; John Cummins, of Innovation Partners; Ian Oliver from Nokia; Joe Baskerville, Head of New Technology at Cogapp, a local digital media company and Nuria Sadurni, Head of Research and Insight at digital marketing agency, iCrossing.

Professor Miltos Petridis, Head of the university's School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics, said: "We are excited to be launching the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) in computing and mathematics. It is an essential part of ensuring our courses remain up to date and relevant to employers' needs so that our graduates get the best chance of employment and the employers get the quality of graduates they require.

"The IAB will also bring additional insight and foresight to our research and economic and social engagement activities. Our high-quality research and economic and social engagement activity clearly informs the student learning experience and provides real impact that reaches far beyond the institution.

"I am delighted at the quality of businesses and individuals already on the board and look forward to working with them to enhance the board still further over the coming months."
