£92,000 training boost for employers

Published 29 March 2013

The University of Brighton has been awarded £92,000 to help employers train staff.

The government funding enables the university to offer tailor-made courses to businesses of any size on their own premises. Alternatively, employers can access training vouchers worth up to £500 for them to send individual members of staff on a University of Brighton course.

The training courses can be accessed via the university's new Training and Development Unit (TDU), a one-stop-shop for companies wanting to work with the university. The TDU can also advise on developing flexible, tailor-made courses which meet companies' specific requirements.

The University of Brighton has already worked with FDM, a leading international IT services provider, the Priory Group and the RAF to develop in-house training to suit each employer's specific needs.

Head of the university's Training and Development Unit, Viki Faulkner, said: "Our approach in bringing tailor-made courses to companies is proving popular with employers. Employees also benefit as they can work towards a university-level qualification.

"The training vouchers and government funding will support the work that we already do with businesses."

Alex Linssen, MSc Programme Co-ordinator at FDM said: "As far as we know, our approach is unique. And we believe it improves our chances of attracting high-calibre graduates as they can further their careers as well as gaining practical skills. We are getting a high level of enquiries from new graduates as a result of our partnership with the University of Brighton."
