Scenario Planning is a strategic planning tool used to make flexible, long-term plans. It is very valuable for a wide spectrum of organisations, both in the public and private sectors, and particularly for those that want to proactively manage their future.
Scenario Planning explores the variables in the external environment, their interrelationship and interactions over time and the impact this will have upon organisations and their strategic thinking. It is an ‘outside-in’ approach to strategic management that can help managers make sense of an increasingly puzzling world in which organisations from both the public and private sectors have to find their way.
The university offers companies and organisations the opportunity to attend tailor-made one or two-day professional development workshops that include a demonstration of the underpinning logic of scenario thinking and an appreciation of the methodological approach for developing scenarios to accelerate organisational learning. Through working in small groups, participants examine the issues surrounding a major problem of general significance to their organisation. Participants will experience the power of scenario thinking to enhance their exploration and understanding of the future.
Course content
Courses will include short lectures, discussions and analysis, together with exercises to demonstrate how scenario planning works and how it can benefit any organisation. Courses will be tailor-made to focus on issues faced by the organisation, so will be of real practical benefit. Participants will work in small groups with about eight people on any course, all from the same organisation, to enable open discussion and to allow real problems to be investigated.
