The course

Social media is more than just a fad, trend or a teenager tool for chatting to friends. It’s an essential part of any communication campaign and many businesses and organisations are seeing huge benefits from engaging with social media. It’s also a good way to know what your competitors or detractors are doing and saying about you. This course ensures you won’t get left behind and by the end of the session you’ll have a Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profile ready to use and an understanding of what social media can do for your organisation.

Who should attend?

This course is for anyone who feels they’re being left behind by the rapid speed of social media but who doesn’t know who to ask for help. It will suit those with no knowledge of social media and those who have used it a bit but are unsure how to maximise the effect and build on their current online activity.

What will I get out of it?

The course will give you the confidence to engage with the three major social media networks and the knowledge and skills to do so effectively. You will also have an understanding of the role of social media in modern communications; its strengths and weaknesses and how to avoid common pitfalls.

What does the course cover?

  • What is social media and why is everyone talking about it?
  • Do we need to do it? What can it do for an organisation or business?
  • Getting started with Facebook, Twitter and Linked In
  • What am I going to talk about?
  • Building an online following
  • Maximising your impact
  • Case studies: who’s doing it well - and what they’re getting out of it

Who is leading the course?

The course is led by journalist, PR consultant and media trainer, Steve Bustin of Vada Media. Steve has an extensive background in the media and PR, having been a broadcast journalist for BBC News, and now a freelance journalist writing for publications including The Times, Amateur Gardening, Gay Times and Absolute Brighton.

Getting more out of social media

Steve Bustin will also be leading a follow on course, Getting more out of social media, on Friday 20 September 2013. This is for you if you have already attended Getting started with social media, or if you are already using social media but don’t feel you’re getting the best out of it or cannot see the business benefit of the time and effort you’re dedicating to it. You can book both courses together at the reduced cost of £450 for both courses - just check the box on this booking form.

This course will help you make your social media usage more strategic, targeted and most importantly, effective. You’ll be introduced to tools, tips and tricks that will help you to use, measure and automate social media. You’ll leave with ideas for generating content that people will want to share, to help promote your message and get advice on running multiple accounts and tapping into blogs and online communities. The session will also cover designing and using a social media strategy, especially important if your social media accounts are being handled by more than one person. By the end of the session you’ll be well on your way to being a social media power-user.
