The course
This short course, delivered through 12 two-hour lectures, provides an overview of the legal provisions with respect to the environment and the legal controls and policy mechanisms available to the international community, the European Union and the UK government.
This course is unique in the UK as each lecture is provided by an individual who is recognised as a leader in their particular field. The course is designed and led by Simon Boyle an environmental lawyer of over 20 years’ experience which has included 10 years with a major manufacturing company with worldwide operations. He has been heavily involved in the development of Wild Law, the first UK Wild Law conference being held at Brighton University in 2005.
A particular strength of the module lies in its breadth and its vocational application to the real world. Course content
Increasing awareness of environmental issues and the need for environmental protection has led to a proliferation of legal instruments. These are not merely the response to current problems but have their origins in the 19th century. The complete course examines the development of environmental regulation including international obligations and their implementation, European Policy and regulation and UK legal instruments and common law.

Course arrangements
Fees
One lecture £20, full 12-lecture programme plus revision session and assessment £550 (successful completion of the associated assessment leads to the award of 20 Credit Accumulation Transfer Points).
Fees are VAT exempt and include all course materials.
If you attend all lectures and opt to take and successfully complete, the assessments at the end of the full two-week course, you will be awarded 20 masters level Credit Accumulation Transfer (CATS) points. Credits may be accepted as accredited prior learning for relevant masters courses at the University of Brighton or for the Masters by Learning Objectives which is run through the Centre for Collaboration and Partnership at the university.
