Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey 2012-13

What is the survey about?

We are contacting recent graduates to take part in is a national survey of everyone who has recently qualified from any university or HE college in the UK. This takes place approximately six months after graduation. The information you provide will be very useful to us and to the government, so that we each have an accurate picture of what graduates face after leaving university, particularly in these uncertain times.

How is the survey is conducted?

You will first be invited to complete an online questionnaire by email.

If we don't receive a completed questionnaire from you we will try to contact you again. If you were a ‘home’ or ‘EU’ student, we will contact you either by email or by phone. If you were an ‘overseas’ student, we will only contact you by email.

We are happy to speak to you by phone between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday (UK time) if this is easier for you. We will call you back so you don’t have to worry about the cost of the call.

If you have changed your phone number or email address, please do get in touch (contact details given below). Please note that it is likely our number will display as ‘blocked’ or ‘unknown number’ when we call you. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent this, but we will always try to leave you a message if we don’t get through letting you know who we are and how to contact us.

If we can't get in touch with you, we may try to get information about what you were doing from a third party; either at the university or someone we can reach using the contact information you have previously provided. However, we do prefer to receive the information from you, so that we know the information is accurate.

Whether you complete the survey online or over the phone it will only take a few minutes and your information is really important to us.

We are aware that it is not easy to complete the survey online using a smartphone. We recommend you either complete this using a PC, Mac, laptop or tablet, or simply contact us to complete it over the phone!

The survey may also be audited - that is, checked to make sure it has been carried out correctly.

What if I don't wish to take part in the survey?

If you don't want to take part in the survey; either directly or via a third party, please contact us to let us know. You can either reply to the email you have been sent, let the person who has called you know you don't wish to take part, or contact us using the details below.

What happens to my information?

Data from this survey will be collected onto our student records system for internal statistical analysis and management purposes.  The Careers Service may use your responses to send you information about support they or other university departments can offer you (where relevant to your circumstances). You can let us know if you do not wish to receive this information.

The data will also be used in an anonymised form to inform current and prospective students (and graduates) of the opportunities available on completion of their courses, both on our website in our graduate destinations reports and Key Information Sets on our course pages, as well as on the Unistats website.

We will send coded information from your answers to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). By returning this form, you are accepting that this will be linked to other information held about you as a student, including similar coded information you gave when you enrolled, and details of the qualification you gained. HESA will pass your record, or parts of it, to other organisations, mostly statutory bodies related to Higher Education.

Visit the HESA website for full details of how your data is used. Please be aware that it is NOT used by these organisations for marketing purposes. Any organisations receiving this data must sign contracts that require that individuals shall not be identified from the supplied data.

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, you have the right to a copy of the information held by HESA and ourselves. Details of how to request a copy of this information (which may incur a fee) can be found at the following links:

Follow-up survey

A follow-up survey is planned for three years time so that we can get more information about the early careers of those with HE qualifications. You might be asked to take part in this follow-up survey as well, which will be carried out by a different organisation on behalf of the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

If you don’t want to take part in the follow-up, you will have the chance to opt out when you complete the current survey. Alternatively you can contact us at any time to tell us you don't wish to take part.

How to contact us
