Chronological

The traditional chronological CV is more useful if you have progressed through the education system without significant gaps.

It is a good idea to start with a chronological CV and then adapt and develop it to suit you and your target audience.

Targeted

If you want to sound more persuasive you will need to target your CV.  This is essential if you are applying speculatively, apply for an advertised position, or are looking for a placement opportunity. CVs that are not accurately targeted are likely to go straight in the bin.

To target your CV you need to identify the employer’s needs (what they are looking for) and clearly communicate how you can meet these.

You should:

  • Speak their language. Review the employer’s website or company brochures to find out what employers in your chosen field expect.
  • Analyse the advertisement and job specification and subtly reflect this back to them.
  • Get an insider’s view. If you can, speak to someone within the company. This will show that you are pro-active and motivated. It will also provide you with unique information as to what is required.
  • Provide proof that you can do the job. Identify your skills, achievements and experiences and match these to the job description (if applying for an advertised job) or to information you've gathered about the company's priorities and values (if you're making a speculative application). Demonstrate that you have a clear understanding of what the position involves/might involve.
  • Stand out from the competition by identifying your unique selling points. Position your key messages for maximum impact on the page.
  • Use networking opportunities to gain constructive feedback on your CV with experts in the field.
