Momentum celebrates your success

We'd like to take this opportunity to reflect on the successes of past years of the Momentum mentoring scheme. In addition to meeting some of our Mentees and Mentors of the Year you'll find out what other participants thought of Momentum and what taking part might do for you and your future career prospects.

2010-11 Mentee of the Year - Delali Dei

"Delali was clearly committed to the process and very well motivated to make it work for him. He wasn’t fazed by my constructive comments and ‘left field’ ways of making a point. He isn’t shy and has asked for things outside of the initial remit e.g. allowing his project team to present their project to my engineering team for comments and critique.

Other employees he spent time with commented on his intelligence and genuine interest. He is clearly a hard working, reflective, self analytical and ambitious character and I suspect our relationship won’t end after the Momentum Programme does. Delali’s attitude, character, work ethic, empathy and motivation have exceeded my expectations of a final year student. I have no hesitation in recommending him for this award. ”

Tim Worley, CEO of Powerstax plc on mentoring Delali Dei.

2010-11 Mentor of the Year - Steve Hearsum

contentbox-quote-orange.gif"Steve is one of the most insightful, helpful and surprising people I've ever met. He has a talent for teasing out the source of problems and offering step-by-step solutions. He helped me to develop a precise professional mindset and to sustain that through my personal, professional and academic progression.

Steve introduced me to inspirational contacts within the industry. He also kindled interest from two companies for me to take up a work placement, and revealed an under-researched area within sustainability communications to explore for my dissertation.

Steve has been the glue that binds the modules of my degree, by identifying the overlaps of the course content in an industrial context. He updated my understanding of social media and building an online presence, and opened up my studies to new theories.

Unprompted, Steve drip-fed me enlightening perspectives and encouragement to support me through tough times. He accommodates my needs non-judgementally, managing to heighten my self-esteem, whilst ever sensitive to the pressures I'm facing. I now feel motivated to establish equally influential (and fun) friendships in the future in order to 'keep the wheels turning'."

2009-10 Mentee of the Year  - Kamil Wilk

contentbox-quote-orange.gif “Despite the downturn in the market and the difficulties this has put him in, Kamil has made a phenomenal effort towards improving his situation. We met on a regular basis to work on his CV, applications and tactics.

Whenever I gave Kamil a suggestion or something to do he took it on board immediately and enthusiastically and was very swift in implementing changes.

He may not have 'the job' yet, but he has rearranged his work to fit around a volunteering position and is continuously looking to improve himself in order to reach his goal and become an engineer.”

Philippa Miché of Rockwell Collins on mentoring Kamil Wilk, 2010.

2008-09 Tom Russell Award for Mentor of the Year - Adele Tomasin

contentbox-quote-orange.gif“She has not only encouraged me but also believed in me more than anyone I have met. I gained invaluable knowledge and experience as her commitment to my development and eagerness to give me every opportunity possible was nothing I have ever imagined or expected.

Adele’s experience in my chosen field gave me a better understanding of the real business world and her guidance fostered my professional and personal development. She introduced me to her colleagues and friends, helped me build my own network and opened doors into industry, resulting in me gaining an interview with a Media and Advertising agency in Milan.”

Estera Geriova, BA International Business student on her mentor Adele Tomasin

2007-08 Mentee of the Year - Benjie Quilao

contentbox-quote-orange.gif“Benjie's positive attitude has paid off, as he gained a second interview for a good job that is a great match for his sandwich year requirements. At the start of the scheme he identified a need to improve his interview technique and has therefore worked hard at developing this to good effect, which has been a notable personal success for him. Self-confidence was also identified as something he wanted to improve, and seeing positive results like this has also instilled in him more confidence in his own abilities.”

Rochanne Siranossian of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, on mentee Benjie Quilao

2006-7 Mentee of the Year - Gloria Ireo

In addition to success for our mentors and mentees, 2007 brought national recognition for Momentum.
The National Mentoring Consortium named University of Brighton Careers Counsellor Robert Prosser as its 'Co-ordinator of the Year' for his work on the project.

2005-06 Mentee of the Year - Savita Khemlani

contentbox-quote-orange.gif"Despite receiving the Mentee of the Year award, I think all of us deserve it and it is just a representation of everyone’s effort – the only thing I did was pick it up. I am also very thankful to the Careers Office and to the Coordinator of this project (Rob Prosser) at the University of Brighton who has also been an admirable source of support, advice and encouragement. I would strongly recommend this scheme to anyone; you genuinely feel that mentors enjoy helping you to develop skills and wish that you could do the same for someone else some day."
