Internship case studies
Read about the experiences of three employers who recruited through our graduate internship scheme. Please contact us if you would like to discuss the support we can offer to help you recruit a graduate intern.
Beaming
Beaming is an internet service provider serving businesses across the UK. We are a fast growing company based in St Leonards-on-Sea and we are proud of our history of local recruitment. We specialise in high quality connectivity for companies with technical requirements. For further information about the company, please visit www.beaming.biz.
We engaged an intern to deliver elements of a customer portal for us. Max came to us from University of Brighton and with his coding skills and keen attitude, he was soon working alongside us to deliver what the business needed. He would work in the office three days a week and then worked from home on the next stage of the development, which he would then present to us the following week.

The key qualities we look for are enthusiasm, and a passion about the use of technology. Our intern was prepared to travel as well, coming from Brighton by public transport every day. However his view was that the real world experience would serve him well in his career, which I know it has done.
Max was an enthusiastic individual with bright ideas and the skills required to deliver the project which we had in mind. The other staff enjoyed his company and benefitted from the exchange of ideas and ultimately our customers benefitted from the work which Max did.
Graduates working in our sector have to be passionate about technology and love problem solving. They must also be able to work as part of a team and it is essential that they have empathy. Our industry is about networks, both physical and social ones.
If you have a specific project which has a definite time frame, then interns are the perfect solution. They gain experience in a place of work and you gain that extra set of skills for that period. The key to a successful internship is making sure that the goals of the company and the individual are complementary. I would absolutely recommend graduate internships to other employers in our sector.

Haberdashery London

David Scott (pictured) who studied BA (Hons) Three Dimensional Design at Brighton, began an internship with product and lighting design agency Haberdashery London in 2010.
With the help of the University of Brighton internship, David was able to undertake a six week placement with Haberdashery design studio in London. Subsequently he was asked to carry on as a freelance designer, and at the start of this year that turned into full-time employment. David is now a full time designer in our team and is here to stay! Internships are the best way for us to find new staff.

University of Brighton
The University of Brighton is keen to develop opportunities for graduates, whether they have studied here or elsewhere. Tara Wyllie (pictured) is an MA Film Production graduate working as an intern in the University of Brighton’s Economic and Social Engagement department.
We needed to make a series of films promoting the university’s research expertise, so we recruited Tara to coordinate the project. Her depth of knowledge in her specialist field is really valuable for this project, and she has also begun to develop the department’s use of social media. We feel that a graduate intern can provide an excellent match of skills for a specific project.
