Initial Teacher Education, University of Sussex

The University of Sussex has a long history of innovation in teacher training, including pioneering the model of school-based teacher training adopted by all training institutions in England. The Department of Education offers routes into teaching for Primary, 7-14 and Secondary.

The Secondary Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is currently offered in English, History, Maths, MFL, Music, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Our barristers have been based in Brighton for 40 years as an annexe of 1 Crown Office Row London.We are, by far, the largest set of barristers based in Brighton. We have grown rapidly, doubling in size and turnover in just 5 years.Each year Chambers offers up to two funded 12-month pupillages. Currently, pupillage is divided between two pupil supervisors, each supervising the pupil for six months.  In addition, pupils are encouraged to travel to court with, and to do paperwork for, other members of Chambers. Free Representation Unit (FRU)

FRU's work is done by volunteers, who are law students, law graduates or lawyers at the start of their career. They use their legal knowledge and skills to help FRU’s clients, while gaining valuable experience.

As a FRU Representative, you will be responsible for the entire conduct of the case: interviewing the client, taking instructions from the client, liaising with the other side, negotiating settlement, drafting witness statements and other submissions, and representing your client at Tribunal. FRU’s Legal Officers provide training, supervise the cases and give advice and guidance.  To make sure that our volunteers are ready to take on cases, FRU requires that they have reached a certain stage in their legal education.

Government Legal Service (GLS)

The GLS offers around 30 training contracts and pupillages each year, all of which are based in London.  Our next recruitment round, beginning in the summer of 2013 will be aimed at those who wish to start their training in September 2015. You must have, or be predicted to obtain, a minimum of a 2:1 in an undergraduate degree. This does not have to be in law. We are looking for strong academic and analytical ability, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and motivation for working in the public service.

Ilex Tutorial College

ITC offer law and GDL graduates a real alternative to the LPC through the ILEX Graduate Fast-track Diploma. The academic qualification to become a legal executive lawyer takes approximately a year and costs a fraction of the LPC. You can enrol at any time of the year on ITC’s supported distance learning courses and study while in full-time employment. If you’re working in a legal environment then that can count towards ILEX’s qualifying employment requirement for legal executive lawyers.

Concordia is a charity committed to international volunteering as a means to promoting intercultural understanding and peace.
