The Virtual Careers Fair

Dates for a future Virtual Careers Fair are still to be confirmed.

In July 2011 we held our first virtual careers fair in collaboration with the University of Sussex.

This online-only fair for students graduating in 2011 gave students and graduates the opportunity to access a wide range of local, regional and national employers and to ask them questions about their job vacancies and recruitment processes.

Exhibitors in 2011 included Accenture Technology Solutions, the Bank of England, GCHQ (Government Communications Head Quarters), FDM Group, Hastings Direct, Majestic Wine Warehouse, Santander and The College of Law.

We also ran live chat services during the virtual careers fair so that students could get advice on a range of careers issues.

The 2011 fair is closed. You can still visit the website, although you won’t be able to access employer details. For further information about any of the exhibitors please contact us. Visit the virtual fair.

Making the most of a virtual careers fair

If you know what type of work you want, look at the list of participating employers and decide which ones can offer you that type of work. Then, look at the list again and see if you can identify others who may be able to offer similar work.

Remember that all organisations have staff in general business functions, like marketing, finance, IT and human resources.

Read the company information on the employers’ pages carefully.  You can then use the contact forms to ask deeper questions, such as:

  • What are your selection criteria for this type of work?
  • How would you view an application from me, as a mature student?
  • What are you really looking for in your recruits?
  • Can you explain your selection process to me?

If you know that you are interested in a particular organisation you can send them your CV through the contact form.

If you don't know what you want to do think about the factors that will help you decide. What are YOUR criteria for what you want out of your career?  Make a note of what you want and ask the companies at the fair whether they can offer those, be they financial incentives, working styles, prospects to progress or others. It might help you to read through our information on where to start.
