Employability Skills Programme

The Employability Skills Programme is designed to help you develop your career plans and improve the skills that will be useful in the workplace. We run a short series of workshops a number of times during the year.

If you attend all workshops in a programme you will receive a certificate which can be used to enhance CVs and job applications.

 

Spring Programmes

Moulsecoomb Spring Programme

You will be required to pay a £10 cash deposit in advance, which will be refunded following your attendance at all four workshops. To sign up please email careers@brighton.ac.uk stating your name, student number, course, mobile phone number and the programme you wish to attend.

Leadership and Teamwork

Wednesday  8 February, 1pm – 2.30pm, Watts 512
This workshop will help you understand the fundamentals of leadership and will be an important first step towards your goal of becoming a leader.  Stuart Maddocks, an international Management Consultant, will present his thoughts on the subject of leadership, developed from the extensive experience he has of working with leaders in the private and public sectors

Presentation Skills

Wednesday 15 February, 1pm – 2.30pm, Watts 512
Presentation skills and pitching are an essential part of any modern day job role. Whether you are selling an idea to a client, sharing the findings of your research, or taking a stand in a debate, it is absolutely crucial that you can hold attention and share your ideas in a compelling way.  This session will provide tools to help you feel more natural in front of an audience, a simple structure for effective presenting and an opportunity to practice and get feedback.

Become Confident and Employable

Wednesday 7 March, 1pm – 2.30pm, Mithras 116
Learn how to identify barriers in the employability process and how you can overcome them.  Discover how to present yourself confidently in different contexts: CVs, application forms, interviews, presentations, assessment centres.  Find out how to use positive techniques to succeed in interviews.

Grand Parade Spring Programme - Employability Skills for Creatives

This programme will focus on the skills needed to work within the creative sector.  All workshops will take place in the Boardroom (M2), Grand Parade, from 12.30pm – 2pm.

Self Management

Wednesday 22 February
This session will provide you with practical ideas on how you can set goals, prioritise tasks and manage your time and the support you need, effectively.

Creativity in the workplace

Wednesday 29 February
In this workshop, you will gain an understanding of the relevance of creativity in the workplace, and will be able to test your own of creative-thinking skills and creative problem-solving abilities on some real examples from the workplace.

Teamwork

Wednesday 7 March
This session will look at the personal skills and qualities you will need to become an effective team member. You will already have developed some of these and we will help you identify them and show you how to get more, ready for you to talk about at that important job interview.

Networking

Wednesday 14 March
Whether you like it or not, networking is a valuable employability skill relevant to anyone and everyone – whether you are looking for a job, already in employment, or wanting to set up your own business.  In this workshop you will find out how to network more effectively and learn how to develop your own professional network.

Career planning and CV/application Tips

Wednesday 22 February, 12pm – 1pm, Room 4.09
Planning your career can be daunting. The first part of this workshop will cover steps you can take to start this process. Then we will cover at the basics of writing CVs and application forms, and at the best way to market your skills, achievements and experiences to potential employers. We will also look at writing covering letters.

Being Confident and Employable

This workshop aims to raise awareness of the barriers in the employability process, and to start to show how to overcome these barriers. You will also discover how to present yourself confidently in different contexts, and to use positive techniques to succeed in interviews.

Going for job interviews

Wednesday 7 March, 12pm – 1pm, Room 4.09
This session will look at the work you should do in advance for interviews. We will discuss some of the techniques you might want to use on the day and the likely questions that you may be asked by an employer.

Networking and building networks

Tuesday 17 April, 12pm – 1pm, Room 4.15

Using social media to find a job

Tuesday 24  April, 12pm – 1pm, Room 4.09
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.....you probably already use social media to catch up with your peers and arrange a night out, but are you using it effectively for finding a job? In this workshop, you will learn how to use social media effectively to help you in finding work and landing a job.

Employers increasingly look for broader skills when recruiting.  Programmes later in the year will cover areas such as leadership skills, how to present with confidence, and communicating effectively in the workplace.  We will be running these on at least two sites, including Grand Parade.
