Face-to-face networking

You may think that networking requires schmoozing and recoil at the idea. Just remember that everyone started their career somewhere and that most people will be willing to advise you on your chosen sector if you are friendly and open.

If it feels appropriate, ask people for their card when you meet them and ask them whether they would mind if you contacted them for some advice.

Always follow-up with anyone who was helpful or who you would like to meet in the future. Send them an email within a day or two to thank them for their time and any advice they gave you, or just to say that you enjoyed meeting them.  Don’t leave this too long as they may then forget who you are, especially if they met a lot of other people at the same time.

Don’t expect your contacts to help you and don’t ask directly for a job, however if you are enthusiastic and optimistic, you can start to build up relationships. If they like you, they are more likely to want to help or even give you a job.

It is also a good idea to connect with useful contacts who you have met in person on one of your online networks. This will allow you to keep in regular contact with them.

Meeting with contacts

Once you have identified or made some contacts, try and arrange a meeting to gain advice and discuss any possible opportunities.

Prepare yourself before the meeting. Plan some questions or areas for discussion, for example:

  • Can you describe a typical working week?
  • What do you enjoy most about your job?
  • Would you recommend any particular experience/training relevant to this field?
  • How did you get into the role?
  • Has the role changed?

If you get the opportunity you could show them your CV or portfolio and ask their advice.  You could ask:

  • How does my CV look?
  • What would you change or modify?
  • Do you have any advice or ideas for me?
  • Who else should I be talking to?
  • Are there any groups or events I should attend?
  • Are there any publications I should read?
  • What would you do if you were me?

After meeting a contact

Always thank the contact for their time and advice. Make a note of what you have found out to remind yourself when applying for jobs.
