Mark James
English language and Linguistics (2012)

Like most students, I was a little apprehensive about life post-graduation; unless you’re of The Apprentice ilk then I think you probably are too. It’s a big change being thrust out into the working world.
There’s a considerable amount of resources that can help ease the transition though and in my case in particular, the Careers Vacancy Service proved invaluable, providing access to graduate training schemes and opportunities that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.
It was the Vacancy Service that advertised my current Copywriting role at Crunch Accounting, a Brighton based online accountancy firm. After a successful application and trial day, I’ve been in the role for just over six months now and it’s one I’m sure I would have missed out on, had I not signed up to the service. Ultimately, the site found me a role specific to my degree.
I’m responsible for producing content for the Crunch website and associated media channels, so I’m continually using skills cultivated during my time at university, applying knowledge gained from linguistics, language and journalism modules.
Following six months in the role I’ve now built up a considerable portfolio, writing extensively online and ghost writing for Crunch Directors for both local and trade press, developing skills I can take throughout my career.
To third years and graduates I’d say make use of everything the Careers Service has to offer and elsewhere, look at more than just the bigger companies. Growing companies like Crunch offer considerable opportunities to graduates, you might just have to look a little harder to find them!
Satyanarayana Seeramreddy
MSc Pharmacology (2012)
Satyanarayana Seeramreddy (Satya) graduated from the University of Brighton in 2012 with an MSc in Pharmacology but after a few months seeking work he decided he needed extra support.
In September 2012 he took part in a three day course called Transform Your Life which is run by the Careers Service in partnership with the Counselling and Well-being service. Over 3 days this course helps students and graduates improve their CV writing, job interview techniques but above all gives them a platform of confidence and enthusiasm to help them succeed in getting work.
Soon after completing this course Satya was successful in getting a Scientific Officer position at the Institute of Cancer Research.
"My degree was a necessary requirement but I needed to show other skills in my application. Above all the communication and presentation skills I learnt at university and during the Transform Your Life course helped me succeed in the interview."
For Satya confidence is also important. "My advice to students is to show how BIG you are". Developing self confidence and conveying this are big factors in the Transform Your Life course and these transferable skills combined with his degree have helped Satya realise his ambitions.
