This course, delivered by experts in the field, is intended both for engineers with relatively little experience and for those with some relevant experience wishing to consolidate their familiarity with the technology and to gain a deeper understanding of the major challenges to be met.

Course content

• Basic thermodynamics of refrigeration systems
• Components of automotive air conditioning system, compressor, heat exchangers, expansion devices, accumulator/receiver, lines, fan and blower
• Comfort and vehicle air conditioning system requirements. System performance and control
• Background to the recent need for a more environmentally friendly refrigerant
• A short overview of alternatives considered
• Detailed consideration of industry’s chosen refrigerant – R1234yf. Implications for components, materials, cost and the environment. Refrigerant development and validation process
• System development process and in-vehicle testing and validation.

The course is led by Professor Morgan Heikal of the University of Brighton with assistance from Dr Tim Cowell, who for 10 years, was responsible for European Advanced Development for a global thermal systems supplier. They are supported by specialists currently active with the OEM, Jaguar and with leading systems suppliers Valeo and Delphi. The course places particular stress on the recently seen need to develop the new environmentally friendly refrigerant and on its implications. In this, the course is supported by a Honeywell, a key player in the development of the chosen refrigerant.
