Extended Masters for Computing Programmes

The Extended Masters (EMA) for Computing Programmes (CP) is designed for students who have the appropriate academic qualifications and experience to gain a place on a University of Brighton Master’s course in a computing subject, but who need an extended period of study in order to develop the English language skills required to complete their course successfully.

The Extended Masters for Computing Programmes is available for following courses:

• Computer Science MSc (EMA PGCert PGDip)
• Computing MSc (EMA PGCert PGDip)
• Digital Media Production MSc (EMA PGCert PGDip)
• Information Systems MSc (EMA PGCert PGDip)
• Internet and Distributed Systems MSc (EMA PGCert PGDip)
• User Experience Design MSc (EMA PGCert PGDip)

The EMA (CP) course will give you:

• Unconditional entry offer to assist with obtaining your visa – you will only need one visa for your whole course.
• A language course specially designed for postgraduate study in the area of Computing.
• An opportunity to make a great start on your Master’s programme with a stronger command of the language of Computing and skills to deploy it effectively.
• An opportunity to work with specialist tutors before starting your 12 months Master’s degree.

Depending on your level of English on entry, EMA (CP) offers two extended periods of study, or routes, as shown in the table below.

• With an entry level of IELTS 5.5, with 5.5 in writing, 5.5 in speaking and 5.5 in listening (or equivalent), you can register for the 16 month EMA (CP) route. This is 3 months (12 weeks) of subject specific English language before your Master’s degree
• With an entry level of IELTS 6.0, with 6.0 in writing, 5.5 in speaking and 5.5 in listening (or equivalent), you can register for the 15 month EMA (CP) route. This is 2 months (8 weeks) of subject specific English language before your Master’s degree.

Once you have successfully completed your extended period of study, you can automatically proceed to your Master’s course.

For each extended route, you have to study 2 additional assessed modules (EY307 and EY308). The different routes require different amounts of study.
