Date of lecture: 10/02/2011

The MSc students attended an IMechE lecture hosted by The University of Brighton entitled Solar Car Racing.

Mark Parrett of Ricardo UK Ltd illustrated the relevance of solar car technologies using the experiences of the Cambridge University team in the 2009 Global Green Challenge. It was an interesting and well presented lecture which covered technical aspects such as aerodynamics, motor control and battery management as well as important non-engineering topics such as logistics and marketing.

Speakers:
Mark Parrett was a member of the CUER team and graduated from Cambridge University 2009.  The CUER team was the UK's only team in the 2009 Global Green Challenge and has built two solar cars in the group's two-year history.  Mark is now an engineer at automotive consultancy, Ricardo UK Ltd..

Description:
In October 2009, Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) took on teams from across the world in the Global Green Challenge http://www.globalgreenchallenge.com.au/, a 3000km journey across Australia for solar-powered cars.  Racing across a barren continent, using nothing but the power of the sun, makes for an inspirational spectacle, but what can the engineering industry learn from development of these highly-specialised vehicles?  This talk explored the relevance of solar car technologies, illustrated using the experiences of the Cambridge team.

This event was organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
