This lecture on the Bloodhound Land Speed project was given by Sir Richard Noble at the University on 17/11/11.
Mr Noble, who held the record from 1983 to 1997, was project director of the Thrust programme which achieved the first-ever supersonic land speed record. He is now director of the Bloodhound project, sponsored by the institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which aims to achieve a new record of 1,000 mph in 2013.
His enthusiastic lecture, The World Land Speed Record with Bloodhound supersonic car, organised by IMechE, blended high technology, mathematical modelling and management with the need to educate the young with exciting engineering projects. He balanced nicely the need for precision and detail against the big unknowns in driving a car at 1000 mph.
