Mechanical Engineering BEng(Hons)

quote

“I applied to study Mechanical Engineering BEng(Hons) on the same day that I met the Dean of Science and Engineering, Professor Andrew Lloyd at an application event! I lost my left arm in a car accident while studying for my A-Levels and came straight to the University of Brighton upon completion. Coming into an engineering course many encouraged me to change into a less practical course. I was determined, but worried about how I would attend practical aspects of the course.”

Professor Andrew Lloyd said: quote

“When I met Raj I could see his potential and encouraged him to apply. I was impressed by his determination and desire to pursue an engineering degree. I was delighted that Raj was awarded a Malaysian International Scholarship to support him to study here. The university enjoys strong links with Malaysia, through our engineering alumni. Our first University of Brighton ambassador from overseas was Tan Sri Shamsuddin founder of Sapura Holdings who was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Brighton in July 2007. Through recruiting more highly motivated and conscientious students like Raj we also hope to continue to maintain our important alumni presence in Malaysia.”

How have we supported your studies?

quote

“The Disability and Dyslexia team helped me contact the course leader and discuss the slight alterations to the practical sessions and assessments. They also helped me with mitigating circumstances when my disability has occasionally impacted on my ability to study. Without their support I wouldn't have known where to go, who to see and what to do. I’d advise students to contact them early on to avoid frustration from losing time and energy trying to collect bits and pieces of the puzzle. After winning the 2011/12 election, I’m now the Student Union’s representative for Disability.”

What is the best aspect of being a student in Brighton?

quote

“Brighton is a place where you can do whatever you want, without being judged. The city caters for a wide range of people, with a variety of interests. As an international student this was appealing - everyone has been really friendly.”

What are your plans for the future?

quote

“I hope to stay in Brighton and continue studying after completing my degree. I’m interested in psychology and prosthetics as a result of my experience, so I’ve been exploring career opportunities at Sussex NHS Trust, with the hope of working in prosthetics.”
