Member of the university’s mentoring scheme for students from black and minority ethnic groups, Savita Khemlani, won the National Mentoring Consortium (NMC) mentee of the year competition.
Savita, a BSc Software Engineering student, received her trophy from newsreader Krishnan Guru-Murthy at Barclays HQ.
"Having had the opportunity to participate in this scheme gave me the chance to experience career guidance. My mentor has provided me with continuous support and advice throughout all our planned meetings. He has helped me evaluate how my skills and personal attributes could be of assistance to me in the workplace and in different occupations."
Mentors and mentees worked together over the course of seven months meeting regularly to identify and improve core business skills and exchange knowledge. The aim of the scheme is to improve students’ employability and to enhance their prospects of career success, while offering employers direct contact with the next generation of graduates and providing a broader insight into modern university life.
Savita originally from Spain came to England as she wanted to experience higher education abroad. However getting used to a new culture language, and a new way of studying all took time and the mentoring programme helped her adapt.

My degree also incorporated a placement year which was a fantastic opportunity to get a taste of the business world. I found it a very rewarding experience and would sincerely recommend it. The year out also complemented the skills I’d learnt through my mentor."
