The Excellence with Industry (EWI) programmes enable you to work with some of the UK's most prestigious employers in the engineering industries. You will learn enhanced project management, business management and interpersonal skills, in addition to the technical and academic knowledge you will gain throughout your degree.
If you are studying any of the courses below, you will be eligible to be considered for the EWI programme:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Digital Electronics, Computing and Communications Engineering
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
You will benefit from:
- Reinforced academic study with industry-based learning
- Rotation of industrial placements in at least three of the EWI participating companies
- Work-based project assignments
- A mentor programme to ensure that you receive individual support, guidance and encouragement to maximise your potential and manage your learning effectively
- A guarantee of employment upon graduation (subject to minimum performance criteria)
- Regular income through bursaries
The combination of academic study, industrial placements and validated workplace learning results in an MSc or MEng degree and gives you a competitive edge upon graduation. All courses are accredited by the relevant professional bodies.
The programme is led by Southern Water and has been developed collectively with companies which include:
Atkins – Multi-national engineering, design and management consultancy
- Costain – an internationally recognised engineering and construction group
- MWH – a global provider of consulting engineering, construction and management services
- United Utilities – managing and operating water, wastewater, gas and electricity networks.
During the programme you will develop relationships across the organisations, enabling you to make an informed decision as to which company you may wish to work for upon graduation.
Study programme
If your application is successful, you will join the EWI programme at the end of year two and will remain on the programme for a further two years (subject to satisfactory progress), completing your masters degree.
Selection criteria
The selection criteria have been developed to attract talented, motivated candidates who aspire to develop a world class career. You will need to perform well during the first two years of study and undergo a selection process which will include a presentation and interview.
