Six reasons to study mathematics at the University of Brighton
Mathematics graduates are sought after for their highly developed analytical skills and capacity to apply their knowledge to a wide range of problems relevant to modern industry and commerce. In 2006 we were voted by the Guardian to be one of the top 20 universities at which to study mathematics.
Courses
Our undergraduate programme includes the option to combine mathematics with statistics, finance, computing or business. Across all courses for the first two years, the emphasis is on developing essential knowledge and techniques in mathematics. This provides a solid foundation for later specialisation in the final year.
Core mathematical skills can be applied across a wide spectrum of employment opportunities including:
- Finance
- Consultancy
- Actuarial work
- Software engineering
- Project management
- Medical and industrial statistics
- Government.
Graduates may also progress to postgraduate study and research, and teacher training courses.
In addition to core skills you will also develop advanced analytical skills, teamwork, communication, report writing and presentation skills.
Students are supported by staff with extensive industry and commercial expertise through a wide spread of research and consultancy. The growth of information technology and the power of the consumer have resulted in an increasing need to collect and analyse information.
Professional and industry links
Our mathematical science undergraduate awards are approved by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA).
The Computational Mathematics research group is currently working on the modelling of the transient sound field radiated by a loud-speaker cone as part of a long-standing collaboration between the University of Brighton and B&W Loudspeakers Ltd.
Placements
You can take an optional paid placement year in a relevant job arranged by the school's placement unit. This gives you the chance to apply your specialist skills and gain valuable hands on experience. It helps you develop contacts for future employment, so you get a head start in your career search when you graduate.
