University of Brighton’s Chelsea School will have 7 students who studied BA(Hons) Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) graduating this year with a first-class honours degree.

Physical Education Principal Lecturer, Fiona Smith was delighted to have so many students achieve a first- class award. She said “for students on a physical education teacher training degree achieving a first is a real challenge. The majority of the course is compulsory, so they do not have the opportunity to specialise in particular strengths or areas of interest. Instead they have to demonstrate excellence across a broad range of modules.

“They should all be very proud of their achievements. I am confident that this group will have a forward thinking and positive contribution to make to the physical education profession”.

The 7 students are Sam Carter, Leanne Cook, Leah Dixon, Tim Goldsmith, Andy Gore, Ben Gould and Stacie Long.

All students thoroughly enjoyed their time at Chelsea School. They were impressed with the friendliness of the lecturers at Chelsea School and how they could always go to them for help.

Leah Dixon came to Chelsea School after dropping out at another university. She went back to shop work, but after a few months was bored. After visiting friends at Chelsea School and hearing great things about the university Leah decided to apply. She said “I was really nervous about studying at Chelsea School after leaving another university. But as soon as the course began I loved every minute of it and am really pleased to graduate with a first”.

Stacie Long had an article published in the journal ‘Physical Education Matters’ during her time at university. Although she currently holds a teaching post Stacie would be interested in continuing her education by doing a masters degree at the University of Brighton in the future.

Despite recently graduating, all 7 students are already teaching physical education or have a teaching job in physical education lined up that will begin in September.

Head of Chelsea School, Professor Jo Doust was delighted with the results. He said “this wonderful achievement reflects the continued growing success of Chelsea School”.
