Ali Oliver, the Director of Sport for the Youth Sports Trust, visited the Chelsea School on 25th February to discuss the coalition government’s policies on physical education and school sport. Over the past six months, there have been numerous decisions and changes of coalition government policy towards the funding provided for physical education and school sport, ranging from the decision on October 20th 2010 by the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, to remove all funding for PE, to the recent announcement by the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt, of ring-fenced funding to employ 450 school games organisers.

Ali gave an insight into the political decisions and their apparent changes and also discussed how the Youth Sports Trust have been working with the coalition government to facilitate the future direction of PE and school sport.

The one hour session was attended by over seventy students from a variety of courses, including physical education students, sport study students, and sport and leisure students. The lecture was also attended by over twenty five members of staff and a visiting Professor, Stuart Biddle, who is internationally recognised as the authority on motivational and emotional aspects of physical activity, sport and exercise.

The session was organised by Jon Binney, Senior Lecturer in Physical Education at Chelsea School.
