Sport and Exercise Science

Sport and exercise science concerns the function of the body with respect to specific sporting events and the benefits of exercise for health.

Graduates from our degree programmes have a wide range of career opportunities including sports science support consultancy, fitness and lifestyle coaching, education, research, and working in the pharmaceutical and nutrition industries. Sport and Exercise Science at the Chelsea School was one of the first degrees in the country in this area and has a history extending back over 20 years.

Courses

Our academic staff have a wide range of expertise which means you can tailor your degree based on the career you wish to pursure. You can choose to focus on a sport, sport and exercise or exercise and health based curriculum. Independent study modules allow you to focus on the vocational or applied aspects of sport and exercise science.

We have courses for foundation degree top-up to honours, honours degree and postgraduate level.

Professional and industry links

  • Our laboratories are accredited by British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) and English Institute of Sport (EIS)
  • Students studying the undergraduate ' with PE ' route have the opportunity to direct their career towards teaching physical education once they have completed a postgraduate certificate in physical education.
  • We have forged strong links with industry through a series of placement modules, research and consultancy. Academic staff at the school have substantial industry experience and contacts.

Placements

Our placements give you the opportunity to use practical skills, gain hands-on experience and make industry contacts.

Graduate outcomes

Recent graduates have carried on to:

  • work with medical technology company Medtronic, Inc
  • study for a PGCE and become P.E. teachers
  • study for a PhD followed by university and further education lecturing and research
  • work with national and international consultancy companies
  • pursue careers in health and exercise promotion
  • work in the leisure and fitness industry
  • provide sports science support to professional football teams

Research

Sport and exercise science research at the Chelsea School of Sport has benefitted from funding by the Scientific Research Initiative Fund to develop our research laboratories and equipment. We now have six sport and exercise science laboratories incorporating a modern range of instrumentation to measure human responses to exercise. Find our more about our laboratory facilities.
