MA Education (Higher Education)
The CLT is pleased to launch a new Masters programme for staff teaching on Higher Education courses across the University and our partner colleges, which builds on and extends our existing provision of continuing professional development (CPD).
The new MA offers you an opportunity to:
- Build on existing qualifications, such as our PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, by taking MA modules
- Gain credits by completing assessment tasks relating to the CPD you already do (e.g. by attending CLT workshops)
- Receive support when you adapt your teaching or take on new responsibilities
- Gain recognition for the range of learning you have already done in a variety of roles within the HE context
- Broaden and deepen your knowledge and understanding of HE and the research and literature that supports academic practice in a wide range of contexts.
The CLT already has a well-established, externally accredited and highly popular series of workshops, modules and courses that support staff in developing and reflecting on their work. These range from encouraging new lecturers via the Teaching in Higher Education two day short course, to providing a structured framework for supporting writing, via the Writing for Academic Publication module, to assisting with specialist areas such as Course Leadership and Supervision. The new MA framework enables you to take these workshops as credit bearing modules, thus gaining formal qualifications for your professional development. The MA Education (Higher Education) has been developed with colleagues in the School of Education, and is a pathway through the broader MA Education, designed specifically for CPD in Higher Education.
How long do I have to complete the MA?
Once you register for the MA, you have up to 6 years to complete it, so you can be flexible about the number of modules you take in any one academic year.
Can I register for the MA if I do not have a PGCertificate qualification?
You will need to complete a 60 credit PGCertifcate (or equivalent) before you can begin the MA. For APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) and other enquiries, please contact the Admissions Tutor (see below).
What can I study as part of the MA?
The MA has been designed to offer maximum flexibility through the course; you can select a range of modules tailored to your own professional development needs. The only compulsory modules are the research methods module (unless you already have an equivalent), and the final project/dissertation. Alternatively, you may wish to exit the programme at the PG Diploma stage.
Currently, the modules offered by the CLT are (all modules are 20 credits):
LT704, Supervising doctoral student research
LT705, Advanced Teaching Portfolio
LT706, Academic practice portfolio – ‘Open Box’ independent study module
LT708, Blended Learning in Higher Education
LT710, Course Leadership
LTM19, Writing for Academic Publication
LTM01, Supervising Student Projects and Dissertations
Modules are offered in a variety of formats, including via: intensive two-day workshops; in blended learning mode, combining face-to-face sessions with online activities and support; and as primarily self-guided, independent study with guidance from CLT staff. Assessment tasks will support you practically and intellectually to develop and improve the work you already do as an academic (e.g. designing modules, writing academic health reports).
You can also take modules offered from across the whole MA programme, i.e. modules offered by the School of Education. Modules that might be relevant include: Professional Mentoring and supervision in Learning and Development; Management and Leadership in Education.
How do I apply for the MA?
To be eligible for the MA Education (HE), you need to have already completed a PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching (or equivalent). You can apply directly to the MA via the University's online application form, and you will then be invited to interview to discuss your route through the course with the Admissions Tutor (Juliet Eve). If you have already completed CLT modules for credit, you can APL them into the MA (a limit applies).
For all enquiries about the MA, please contact Juliet Eve on 01273 644546 or email j.eve@brighton.ac.uk.
Example route through the MA:
You are a recent graduate from the CLT’s PGCertificate in Learning & Teaching in HE, or you have an equivalent qualification from another institution. You are looking for CPD in the area of supervising your Masters dissertation students. In your second year, you focus on getting publications from a recent research project, and you also prepare for doing your dissertation in the area of student supervision.
