Quality teaching and learning, student motivation and student engagement: what do they mean to you?

Convened by Dr Ming Cheng and Dr Adrian Chown - Centre for Learning and Teaching

Friday 25th May 2012

1.00 – 3.00 pm

Room G4, Mithras House, Moulsecoomb

Quality, student motivation and student engagement have become key terms in the higher education sector. But a university comprises a wide variety of subjects, disciplines and fields of professional education. So within this diverse community how do people in different subjects characterise quality teaching’ and ‘quality learning’? When we examine the detail, to what extent, if any, is there a shared view? And how do people in diverse subjects motivate students to engage in quality learning? This seminar provides an opportunity to discuss your views of quality teaching and learning, and student motivation, and consider their relation to ‘student engagement’.

Starting Well: student wellbeing and retention

A Talking about Teaching seminar led by Charlotte Morris, School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences

Friday 8 June 2012

1.00 – 3.00 pm

Room G2, Mithras House, Moulsecoomb

This session will share insights into good practices around supporting student wellbeing and retention gained from ‘Starting Well’, a research and development project funded by a Learning and Teaching fellowship.

The project builds on previous research in the area of student wellbeing and retention and responds to current national concerns about the mental health of students (Royal College of Psychiatrists Report, 2011). Literature around student wellbeing and retention is closely linked and has indicated a number of areas for positive wellbeing enhancement, including fostering a sense of belonging, social and academic integration, positive relationship development, managing personal and academic transitions, high visibility support and the encouragement of support seeking behaviour.  As well as providing an opportunity for participants to share good practices in their own roles and schools, the session will be an opportunity to identify and discuss areas for continued enhancement.

Drinks will be provided (tea, coffee and water), and you are welcome to bring your own sandwiches.

Talking about Teaching

The 'Talking about Teaching' seminar series provides a forum for open discussion and debate around topics of interest to lecturers in Higher Education.  Open to all members of staff at the university and it's partner insititutions, the seminars are intended to be informal, supportive, thought provoking and informed by research.

The main aim is to provide a space where we can address key issues and develop our academic practice.  Often led by colleagues from within the university or invited external speakers, the format of the seminars ranges from sharing work-in-progress to philosophical debate.  However, the intention is always to provide maximum opportunity for discussion.

The seminars are usually held from 1pm to 3pm on the first Friday of the month (dates for each upcoming event will be available on the website and via uni-info).  Drinks (tea, coffee and water) will be provided, you are welcome to bring your own lunch.
