Personal tutoring
This section is for University staff undertaking any kind of tutorial role, whether as designated personal academic tutor, student support and guidance tutor (SSGT), year tutor or similar.
The University's Personal Tutoring Policy has recently been revised following consultations with the Students Union, Heads of School and other staff. The revised version - now renamed the Personal Academic Tutoring Policy - was approved at Academic Board at the end of 2010, and a summary of the main changes to the Policy, written by Karen Jackson, Head of Student Services, appeared in the Spring 2011 Student Services newsletter sent to schools.
To reflect these changes, a new edition of the Guide for Personal Tutors has been published and can be accessed through the link in the right-hand sidebar. It includes information and advice for new tutors on common areas of concern, discussion points and details of the specialist support services that are available and how to refer students to these.
Additional resources:
- Case studies 1 - based on some real-life situations, designed for discussion among groups of tutors to explore issues and suitable responses, when to refer etc.
- Case studies 2 - similar to above with additional scenarios based on material produced for the University of Leicester Student Psychological Health project - handouts compiled for a workshop on personal tutoring and mental health at the University of Brighton Learning & Teaching Conference, July 2003.
- "Personal tutoring - what to expect" an example of guidance written for students on Personal Tutoring - what to expect, roles and responsibilities. and a sample tutorial record form
- "Study Skills Handbook" (sample of a subject-specific resource designed to help first-year students cope with academic work at this level)
- Drug & Alcohol policy (students) The University has a Drug & Alcohol policy that teaching staff should be aware of. You can access this through staffcentral and hard copies of the policy should also be available from your School office.
