Running for inspiration
Published: 06.06.08
Staff and students from the University of Brighton's Chelsea School have set themselves the challenge of running a relay of 28 half marathons over just five days to raise money for Football 4 Peace (F4P).
Now in its seventh year, the university's sport-based project F4P continues to break down barriers and bring communities together through the medium of football. This year's 2008 F4P project, taking place in Northern Israel from July 4 -13, will see over 1,000 boys and girls from Arab and Jewish backgrounds across Northern Israel coming together to play sport.
Starting at Brighton Pier, the final leg of the run will be the 2008 Leeds 10k Jane Tomlinson's 'Run For All'. Running to raise money for the cause will be university lecturers Stuart Mills, Rob Harley, John Lambert, James Wallis and PhD student Kerry McGawley. Joining them along the route will be other students, staff and friends.
Senior lecturer Gary Stidder, who will be running the first leg explains: "We have been given 16 places for the Leeds 10k but in order to raise money and to honour Jane Tomlinson's remarkable achievements we thought it right to test ourselves with a physical challenge."
"Jane was an astonishingly inspirational figure whose terminal cancer did not stop her running marathons, completing an Iron Man and cycling across the whole of the USA. Jane was awarded the Sunday Times Inspiration Award - the same award given to University of Brighton student Joanna Gardner this year for her work with F4P."
Joanna will also be joining the team and running the 10k. Further information on the Run for Inspiration is available by contacting James Wallis, senior lecturer in PE, Chelsea School on 01273 643861 or at j.wallis@brighton.ac.uk.
