Recycling the world one heart at a time - inaugural lecture from Professor Marie Harder

Science and technology involving the community
(Please note time and venue have changed - see new details below)
Professor Harder's work could be described as 'designing resource management systems'. Although she has worked as a specialist in different technical areas of waste, she now combines rigorous scientific method with social, financial and environmental considerations to design new systems. Examples include household recycling schemes, new recycling products, working with councils on incentives schemes to increase household recycling, as well as drafting designs for a national education programme for a developing country (Colombia).
Professor Harder believes that applied science work will have more impact by relating it to wider environmental, social and economic issues. When all of these aspects are considered together such work is described as sustainable development. Professor Harder's projects have brought together collaborators from industry, research, manufacturing, engineering, non-governmental organisations, voluntary groups, small and medium-sized enterprises, schools, community groups and government agencies.
In her talk Professor Harder will draw out the links between the various aspects of her work and show how it has supported wider sustainable development. For example through the establishment of a United Nations Centre for Education for Sustainable Development to be led by the University of Brighton for the south-east.
